Earth, Good will to
THE COMMUNITY TREE
The happy yuletide season is again
at hand. The old year is closing—
its vicissitiudes o f sorrow and joy,
success und failure, will soon be mat
ters of history. A new year, full o f
hope and promise is at hand.
As
we realize this fact we should take
stock o f our assets and liabilities of
life, and, profiting by past ex
perience, set our guages to meet the
uncertainties o f a future which may
hold much or little, according to the
measure o f our individual efforts
uml efficiency.
It is a boon, indeed, that at least
once a year there comes a time when
men may pause in their struggle for
gain: when they may supplant the
thoughts o f trade with the sentiment
of humanity; when they may reflect
that material gains, after all, should
not be the motive o f life but merely
the means to u higher and better
objective.

OUR PROSPERITY
Every American will take pride
and satisfaction in the information
which is gatheied together in the
annual report o f Secretary Hoover
o f the Department o f Commerce.
The report states, among other
things, that the American standard
o i living is now the highest in his
tory. and that the prosperity o f the
people o f the United States as a
a hole, has never been surpassed by
any nation. There is almost no un
employment in the United States,
the report continues, and the vol
ume of production and consumption
exceeds the figures o f the period
during the World War. There has
been a general improvement in ag
riculture during the year and al
though there ate still some unsatis-
factor} spots in this industry, the ]
go itérai trend is upward. Conditions I
