Uu- til recent t.mes the wife of a never- do-well sort o f husband held her head high and never complained. She just pretended to be happy. The wife o f the man who drank much strong liquor, who had to be dragged in from the door step and who some times even got to “ seeing things” used to say that “ dear George" had a headache because o f late business engagements, and though her eyes were red from weeping, her pride never allowed her to tell the truth. Now, her pride gone, shorn, per haps o f her locks, she tells her troubles to the hairdresser. The beauty parlor becomes a sanctuary for broken hearted, discouraged and unhappy women. The beauty spec ialist or the girl who marcels the hair of the matron knows the trou bles that have put a gray hair here and a wrinkle there. She sympathizes as she irons out the wrinkle or hennas the silvery thread, and lo, the wife leaves the shop looking much prettier, feeling lighter o f heart, and, if the hairdresser is a woman of wisdom, the customer i eaiizes that, after all, her trouble wasn’t any worse than that o f some one else, and, though she may feel .shamed that she has talked so much, she is relieved and goes home determined to overlook some o f the faults o f her husband. Sensible, well-meaning, womanly women really want to look up to their husbands; they want to believe in love as well as in marriage. At this time they are having a bad time trying to adjust themselves to the .imes, the tendencies, the age or whatever one may call it. I don’t .hink the modern woman, who votes, can drive an auto, manage a busi ness concern or understand politics is to blame for so much of the mis understanding regarding marriage. I think much o f the fault lies in the lies they used to tell us when every story ended with the words “ And .hey married and lived happily ever ..fterwards.'’ S U P R E ME JOYED TH EM SELVES TO THE UTMOST. Love should begin in youth, last throughout the years and be unfold ed in all its harmonius beauty in marriage. It should. I will if thi parties concerned are wonderful. But they aren't often. Each expects too much and is disappointed before long. The wives formerly used to suffer in silence. That was when they had pride. Now they don’t keep still. They talk it over frankly, and the result is either they eventually earn that they aren’t the only ones who are in trouble or who have prob- ems, and they become more sensible more philosophical and better tern pered— for they want to retain the.r locks— or they get a divorce and aren’t happy even then. The woman who had a brute of a husband used to make believe that he wa* faithful, noble and good. She didn’t fool anyone but herself. But her pride made her a good preten der. If she was poor and undernour ished she wore her old threadbare gown neatly patched and darned. She sipped her cup o f tea and tried to believe she was genteel. FEBRUARY 11 b nd :. Women Get New Liberty The men have always had the bar ber shop and the shoe shine artist to “ jolly them along” ’ but it is within the last decade that the ordinary housewife and girls o f limited means have gone regularly and xaithfully to the marceller and the bobber of heads. They must not be condemned for the manner in which they enjoy this freedom. False pride and make-believes are done away with in so far as they made the women a poor, pitiful object o f pretense. Woman found she wasn’t really fooling her husband, her neighbor or her friends. Now, hwever, she loves some make-believe, so she puts on a cloak of determination and courage and makes herself beautiful. She has found that crying wont help, neither will suffering in silence. But just the same she is ashamed when .ihe talks too much. So say the wo men who write to me, and so say the aairdressers.
