Sentiment is rapidly growing for
the removal of the drunken automo
bile driver from the highways, and
it is sentiment moving in the right
direction.
There is a call for more drastic
action on the part of traffic officers
and all others with police authority

self with vile booze that befuddles
his brain and then takes to an auto
mobile is a menace to all others who
may be on the road, and it is due
society that he be summarily re
moved and placed where he can do
no harm. I f the danger surrounded
only the drunken driver there would
'e serious objection to his killing
himself, but the danger radiates in
ill directions, and the least of it ap
pears to attach to the intoxicated
man at the wheel.
I f a man were caught sprinkling
acks upon the highway he would be
promptly gathered in and pointed to
as a malicious, vicious criminal, and
some of the more excitable ones
would want him lynched on the spot.
Still, his crime is only that o f injury
to automobile tires, for which ho
should be soundly punished. But
these same people, including thé au
thorities in many cities, will look at
a booze loaded driver as he sallies
forth on his mission of death and
destruction, and he usually goes on
iis wild way until he does some
thing that cannot be recalled. As
we have remarked, the drunken au
tomobile driver is a potential mur
derer, safe only in one place, jail.

A reading of the daily papers
shows that cases of holdups, bur
glaries and bold daylight robberies
are being carried on to an alarming
extent.
The apparent ease which
mark all the acts and the fact that
most of the culprits make a clean
getaway, indicates there is some
thing lacking in the vigilance of o f
ficials. These latter need a lesson
to awaken them to a sense of duty
to the public.
There is a class of citizens who
brush the dust from church pews on
Sunday and then go out on Monday
and the rest of the week and ignore
the laws of their country. They
may throw up their hands in holy
horror at this statement, the very
best evidence that the “ cap fits.”
