The word century means 100. II Is
usually applied to years and accord
Ing to the Christian calendar each 100
years from the birth of our Lord forms
a century. Now ask yourself how-
many years make 100 fears. Of course
the answer Is obvious—100 and not
101, just ns 100 cents make a dollar
says the Sfirlngfleld Republican. When
you have 101 cents you have $1 and I
cent on the second dollar.
The first century closed at mid
night December 31, 100, and that In
stant the Second century commenced
and so the Twentieth century cent
menced on January 1, 1901. Then lie
gnn the year- that with the following

the Twentieth century. It Is absurd
to claim that an event thnt occurred,
say, on March 1 following the birth of
our Lord, which Is the starting point
of onr calendar, did not occur In nnj
year at all. Having occurred after
that birth It occurred in the Christian
era and having occurred In the follow
ing March It occurred In the year
which consisted o f the first 12 months
following that birth. That date should
be written March 1, A. D. The second
year began with the following Janu

Tire ’Em Out
Someone told us once the story ot
an old mammy who, having taken her
charges up to the nursery at sundown
and tucked them In for the night,
would then rock noisily, stamping with
her great feet, slapping her knees and
singing to them at the top of her con
siderable lungs. A puzzled passer by
once pointed out that whereas her
methods might serve admirably to
wake the young ones In the morning.
It seemed on odd way to select for
putting them to sleep.
“It's de best way," the old woman
roared cheerfully "You gotta tire 'em
out Dat’e wat 1 say. Tire 'em out.*
