TUBULAR BACKBONE
One of the most remarkavle feat-
ures o f the now famous tubular
backbone built by the Durant engi-
neers in the new Durant cars, as
well as in star cars also, is just
coming to light with many reports
o f car performance
erformance that
that have
have haen
been
received by the Durant ConVpany
o f California,
according to word
j received by Mr, Cary, the local
I dealer,
Through the rigidity o f the frame
■ made possible by by the tubular
I backbone, which prevents ‘swerving’
I o f the frame, greater road speed
can be held, and longer tire milage
have proven two o f the biggest feat
ures o f tubular backbone construc
tion.
The fact that wheels dropping in-
j to holes in the road would cut road
speed materially, or that it would
shorten tire life, did not become ap-
' parent fo r Bsome time, until many
tests had been made on many occa
sions by owners and by engineers in
I terested in Durant performance.
"This fact,” says Mr. Cary, “ ib
provng immensely valuable to us in
. pointing out the feature provided
! by the tubular backbone. The fact
that the backbone prevents weaving
o f the frame has been demonstra-
! ted in a good many ways, but it is
! just revealed that tire mileage and
road speed are bettered by the same
construction that helps the life of
the whole automobile
“ When a car drops into an aver
age hole or rut in the road, the onjy
I reaction the owner gets is a jar in
the steering wheel and in the car.
However, something else
takes
place; the wheel, either front or
back, may drop as much as eight
inches, or perhaps ten, into the hole,
| with a resultant check on the speed
o f the car, which must be taken up
by increased pressure on the motor
to maintain speed, and the wheel and
\ tire are dealt a terrible blow.
“ It can easily be seen that the ac-
tion brought out by running over
I unpaved roads, or over ruts or cordu-
hardly favorable either to the car or
tires. And, in direct contrast, it
casn easily be seen that anything
done to strengthen the frame
against weaving will cheek these
harmful actions.
“ It has been proven time and time
again that it is impossible to drop a
car, equipped with the tubular back
bone, into a hole deeper than six
inches at the outside, with any one
o f its wheels. The wheel simply
does not go any further down to
strike the oottom o f the hole,
“ It is then simple enough to point
out how life o f the tires as well as
life o f the car, is increased, and
road speed increased also, by the
fact that the jars the car received
in traveling over rough roads are
i not as severe as they would other
wise be.,”

Cross will be the principal speaker.
It is hoped that a good attendance
may be present at this time for no
doubt the question o f paving the
River Road will be discussed and all
those residing in this part o f the
county should be particularly
terested in this vital matter.
R. Thomas Carter, U. S. Forest
