DETROIT, MICH., M arch 25,
K'2p.— One of the most im portant
steps yet undertaken to p rotect used
car purchasers and at the same time
placethe handling of such ears on
a more businesslike basis is the an
nouncement by Mr. E.dsel B. Ford,
president of the Ford Motor Com
pany th at operating under a compa
ny plan Ford dealers will h ereafter
place a guarantee upon used Ford
cars disposed of by them.
The Ford Motor Company is the
first large automobilee concern to
take direct steps in the m a tte r of
used cars. In as much as there i;
about as many Fords in operation in
the country as all other makes com
bined, it is apparent th at the action
of the Ford Motor Company will
ex ert a wide influence on the mai-
keting'.of used car3 and in improv
ing conditions generally in that
phase of the automobile business.
“ Every used Ford car represents
so much unused tran sp o rtatio n
and is of value to someone,” Mr.
Ford said in' his statem ent reg ard
ing the plan. “ The Ford dealer
through his position and intim ate
knowledge of the car certainly is
the best judge as to the value of
n i this tran sp o rtatio n — the best to de
determ ine a price on the milage the
ca r may yet be expected to deliver
— th a t’s his business
“ With this advantage the Ford
dealer is prepared, to give his used
car customers, benefits not likely to
be obtained elsewhere.
“ If re-conditioning is necessary
he
has the work
done
by
by trained Ford mechanics using
improved equipm ent and genuine
Ford parts, and with these econo
mies and advantages he is able to o f
fer the used car to purchaser a t low
cost and with a g u arantee covering
its mechanical fitness.”
The plan becomes effective at
{ once and places a g u aran tee on used
Ford cars purchased from author-
ized Ford dealers, thereby insuring
proper mechanical operation under
ordinary driving conditions,
In assuming the direction and su-
• pervision of this plan to be carried
' out by its dealer organization, the
! Ford Motor Com pany feels th a t it is
| em bracing an opportunity to be of
• g rea ter service to those who p u r
chase used Ford cars.

S tate officials have been advised

they are w arning growers, shippers

The law will work out for the
benefit and profit of any grow er or

A source of much trouble and
m isunderstanding between the farm -
er and the elevator or warehouseman
is unreliable or inaccurate scales.
There is little excuse for this. The
state has a departm ent, under the ju
risdiction of the S tate M arket Agt.,
for testing and correcting, unrelia
ble scales. There ia no charge fo r
the service, and a com petent man
will be sent on request at any tim e.
Recently a scale inspector found
a scale with an e rro r ofthree pounds
to each d ra ft of grain, the resu lt of
which on the car of 750 sacks
am ounted to 450 pounds— the num
ber of pounds billed but not put
into the car. A nother scale showed
an e rro r of 189 pounds on an aver-
af?e load of 4000 pounds,
Many scales are balanced by tying
nuts and washers on the counter-
poise, and many are not properly
installed, not being boxed trt, with
the resu lt th a t the wind will often
niake a difference from one to six
pounds, depending on its velocity.
At one of the Portland mills the

grain, weighed upon track scales, a

American Legion for bringing to
Estacada the American Legion’s
film classic, "The Man Without a
Country.” This unusual film will
be shown in the near future.
“The Man Without a Country”
is said to be one of the most re
markable photo plays ever produced.
When the picture had its world pre-
niier at Washington, D. C., the top
admission price was $10. The pic-
^ure has had a long run in New
York City, where the most critical
reviewers described it as "a picture
that will stir the blood of every
American.
The picture is based Upon Dr. Ed
ward Everett Hale’s masterpiece.
Arnold Daly plays the leading role
of Philip Nolan, “The Mart Without
a Country," who wag banished af-
ter he had damned his country
while on trial for complicity with
Aaron Burr’s treason plot. Patriot-
