He de clared: ‘ ‘ I, for myself, have no delus ions as to the only function which the American government is culled upon to discharge. Their primary, and indeed, their only duty, is to the American people. “ I f by intervention in the af- tairs of a stricken Europe they can advance the fortunes o f the American people, then it seems to me, as an humble observer, that it would be their duty to make such an intervention. But, if in cool perspective, they reach the conclusion that no compen sating gain to the American peo ple will result from reassuming European and world responsi bilities, they would be failing in their duty if they embraced an unnecessary responsibility.” To most this would steth but hard common sense. But hard common sense may be woefully wrong at times. Hard common sense says, “ save your life,” but long ago it was stated on the highest authority that “ whoso ever would save his life shall lose it.” There are higher mo tives than that of self interest, and experience shows that when these higher motives are allowed to rule and self interest sacri ficed to them, the end proves that those who thus sacrificed their self interest in reality gained it. For the underlying principle o f the whole universe is sacrifice, and this affects its whole devel opment. There is no genuine advance without sacrifice. In the natural sphere the higher species have been developed through sacrifice o f the lower, a progress upwards through death. And this is true throughout, and most markedly in man and his development morally and spir itually. It is the sustaining principle o f family life, and where it is wanting the tamily breaks up. Many have found who began life in poverty and acquired wealth, that it brought them luxury and not happiness, for as soon as self denial was not practiced, disin tegration of the home and fami ly set in. The honorable man is confront ed sometimes with the tempta tion to repudiate his obligations because o f self interest But if he does he will find that he has lost out. When the state o f Illi nois was debating whether it should follow the example of Other states and repudiate its debts, Stephen A. Douglass rose from his sick bed, and was car ried to the legislature, and made this motion: “ Resolved that the state o f Illinois will he honest, even if it can never pay a cent,” The result was that the credit of the state was established, money flowed in and a phenome nal financial prosperity ensued which enabled it to pay its debts.
