B ut the real history of Utuh begins with the rise of Mormon pow er there. D iscouraged by the agitation In Illinois and Mis souri, th e Mormons decided to em igrate to the g re a t West. In large caravans they traveled across the plains and In 1847 cam e to S alt L ake City w here they settled. H ere they flour ished, Increasing th e ir num bers and by 1852 they reached a total In this vicinity of over 15,000. Meanwhile, In 1848, by the term s of the treaty of peace with Mex ico, a huge w estern tract, of which U tah w as a p art, was ceded to the U nited States. As no definite governm ent w as a r ranged for, th e control of affairs locally w as for a num ber of years entirely In the hands of the ofll- eers o f th e Mormon church. They, accordingly, m ade up a constitution and organized un der the nam e of th e S tate of D eseret. T his Is a word taken from the Book o f Mormon, and signifies, “In d u stry ." A pplication w as made for adm ission to the Union, hut th is w as refused nnd the federal governm ent Instead organised the T errito ry of Utah in 1850. The first governor was Brigham Young, th e successor of Joseph Sm ith nnd president of the Mormon church. The u tteinpt to do aw ay with polygamy m et with little success until in 1HIK) the Mormon church finally agreed not to countenance it. Meanwhile, growing antag onism between the Mormons and non-Mormons verged nearly on civil war. F inally a general am nesty w as declared nnd a fte r many requests U ta h w as ac- ceptyd as the forty-fifth sta te of the Union in 181)6. I Father Goose The entertainment staged on Tuesday evening in the High School auditorium for the bene fit of the library, was well at- i tended. It consisted of a num ber of tableaux by children illus trating well known nursery rhymes. Miss Florence Kenaall sang the rhymes depicted by the tableaux with Miss Nova Smith as accompanist. The children looked charming and all did re- j markably well. Burt Moore played some selections on hisj saxaphone, and Mrs. H. Kitcli- ing sang a solo. The stage was tastefully decorated with autumn foliage, and the receipts netted about $32.
