Making mankind the meoium of Grace,
And thus the soul’s ideal of loveliness
Through mortal imago we may clearly trace.
And not in man alone, but everywhere
In Nature’s realm we find a Hand can turn
Each common form to Beauty, strange and rare,
Ennobling all that we are apt to spurn.
We look too far,—how oft the gem is found
,
Close ot our feet in what seemed lifeless clod,
Who knows when mists are wreathing from our ground
What shape a soul may take that comes from God.
A world o f Beauty, with a Life Divine,
Such is the heritage that has been given,—
No cruel Fate, but Love that shall refine
The twofold Being, and keep earth a Heaven.
ALL “ Sons o f God,” through HIM,—such is to-day
Our earthly joy, the prayer of happy homes
And families, that this same Spirit may
Make Earth and Heaven one, when Christmas comes.

GARFIELD BREVITIES
Mr, and Mrs, Phil Standish
motored to Portland for the
week-end.
A wave of sadness passed over
the community on Monday when
word came that one of Garfield’s
pioneers had passed away, R. G.
Palmateer. And on Tuesday of
last week, D. W. Robertson,
father of J, B. Robertson. The
families have the sympathy of
their many friends.
Mrs. W. Salzvedel had a most
pleasant surprise on Wednesday
afternoon, when on answering
the door she beheid a number of
neighbors, who had come to wish
her a happy birthday. Those
enjoying the event with her
were Mesdames Downey, Lam-

“ Laugh and grow fat” , some
one has said, so if that is the
case everyone attending the
Hard Times social at the Grange
hall Saturday evening, had a
chance to gain an average of
five pounds each, as it was one
continuous laugh. Much credit
is due the committee, Mrs. H.
Davis, Mrs. M. J. Weatherby
and Mrs. Theo. Carpenter for
the good time had by all. Those
carrying off the first prize were
Mrs. Earl Gunter and Mr. Shaf
fer; a close second Mrs. Coe and
Theo. Carpenter. Little Gilbert
Weatherby was first in the chil
dren’s class. Hard times were
in evidence every where; lantern
lights, refreshments of brown
bread and beans, but delicious
coffee made by Mrs. L. Palma

amounted to over four dollars.
