January (5, 1921 Foreword For 1921 Thursday, January 6, 1921 EASTERN CLACKAMAS NEWS P ige Four The value of history is Ihe light it throws on the questions of the present. A study of it reveals that the problems of today were the problems of yes terday. And a great lesson which a study of history furnish es, is, that one secret of success is continually to push ahead. Speaking once with a civil war veteran about the respective qualities of Generals McClellan and Grant, he remark« d that when McClellen was in command everything hung lire, which was depressing. Put as soon as Grant was put in a-» chief, it was “get there" from the start, and this had a most stimulating effect. When a man is constantly striving to go ahead, he does not have time to worry or ba!k at obstacles. He meets the lat ter and overcomes them before he is aware of their existence. So it will be well at the begin ning of a new year to adopt a progressive policy loth as a t *v n and as individuals. T1 • effect will be elictrifying and beneficial and do much towards allaying dissatisfaction and pet ty jealousies which disturb the peace and cramp the develop ment of small communities. Let “ Forward" then, be our fore word for 1921. Editors seem to In* in vogue as candidates for office this year. We have been seriously consider ing whether we should not throw our castor into the ring. Un fortunately we cannot think of a federal office for which we are qualified. If like King George, President Harding kept a private chaplain on his staff, we might try for that, but as lie is either a hard or soft shell Baptist and we are staunchly Episcopalian, the combination would hardly work. Etheridge promises to prove that Morris was to blame for the crash ot the bond firm, if he be given immunity. How about honor among thieves? Whatever may be the opinion of his political and jourualistic opponents, none wijl deny the marked ability of G. C. Chap man. editor and publisher of the Oregon Voter. In his especial line of analysis and summary, he is unique. An instance of his skill in this respect, is the legis lative number of the Voter which has just been issued. It contains a complete account of the per- sonelle of the coming state legis lature with biographical sketch es of its members and other pertinent information. During its session, this erudite editor will be on the job and with eagle eye and keen discernment keep tab on all that goes on. Noth ing seems to escape his notice and when the legislature passes into history, he will give a suc cinct account of its merits and demerits. “Quis custodiet cus- todes ipsos?” As concerns our state legislators the answer is Chapman. He is the recording angel whom they should hold in mind if not in the affection. For those who are interested in any bill, he will for $5.00 ad vise them by mail, telephone or telegraph of every move which is made in connection with it, eitner in committee or on the ffoor of either house. And those who wish to keep posted of the ins and outs of the session, can not do better than subscribe for the Vo‘er. Don’t Class the Stradivara with a Common Talking Machine.
