Thanksgiving D^y
This year celebrates the ter
centenary of the landing of the
Pilgrim fathers, and this Thanks
giving Day is the 800th anniver-
sary of the first. If anyone in
the company on board the May
flower, could have had prophetic
vision of the future development
of the country in which they had
just landed, he would not have
dared to have made it known, for
fear of being regarded as insane.
%
Too many take this phenomenal
development as a m a t t e r of
course, without any considera
tion as to ihe why and where
fore. The course of this world’s
history is not a series of chapters
of accidents, but the record of
the unfolding of a vast plan,
which reveals the wisdom, power
and gory of its Creator. So-
called secular history has a relig
ious content for those who van
reaj it aright. The history of
our own nation is just as relig
ious as that of the Jews, for we
are under the dominion, protec
tion and guidance of the same
Cod, and our national birth and
shaping of our destiny are both
due to Him. The value of Jewish
historv is that it presents in
clearer form than any other, the
mutual relation between God and
a people. A study of it shows
how and why nations increase
and prosper on the one hand, and
the causes of their decadence on
the other. On a day like Thanks
giving. the eighth chapter of the
book of Deuteronomy should be
read and carefully pondered over,
for it applies to the American
nation as much as to Israel. In
fact while primarily written for
them, it was also for us who
should come after. The solemn
warnings it contains, are espec
ially needed today, for the wav

with a paiticular solemnity, for
it marks the beginning of a new
century in our national history.
And as the past is reviewed and
the future faced, the admonition
of the aged lawgiver is that we
should take to heart if we desire
the true welfare of ourselves and
our beloved land. “Beware that
thou forget not I he Lord thy God,
in not keeping His command
ments, and His judgments and
His statues.”

may well claim the championship
in raising potatoes, judging from
the exhibit he has in the window
of The People’s Store. Not only
are they of gigantic size but the
number to the hill is phenomenal,
fifty and a quarter pounds beir.g
