June 24. 1920 “ To run or not to run, that is the question.” This seems to be the problem which* is worry ing Mr. McAdoo more than any o f the multifarious jobs, which were thrust on him during the war. First he will and then he won’ t, then he reconsiders and intimates he may, again he per emptorily refuses but his friends declare he will as a patriotic duty etc, etc. He is like Julius Caes ar who thrice refused the crown, but would have accepted it if it had been offered him again, only unfortunately for him, he was assassinated. auscr s J(c0taurant “ The Place Where You Will Like to Eat ” Short Order Lunches M eals a la Carte Regular Dinners H om e-M ade Pies and Pastries SPECIALTIES Choice Confectionery and Ice Creams ■ I 1.1 3T J ■ T h e C h atau q u a and T h e S m all T o w n The Chatauqua has come and gone and a fair estimate of it can now be drawn. One thing is certain, that it was the best by far, o f the three held in Estaca* da. As far as the lectures and other features were concerned, they Were equal to those o f much bigger Chatauquas. The ques tion however is, “ was it worth while while to bring it here, where interest in it is difficult to arouse?” The answer to this depends on the point o f view. From a financial standpoint, it paid neither the Chatauqua nor those who backed it. It is prob able that the former made but little over their actual expenses, while the latter will be out pf pocket to a slight extent. But viewed educationally its benefit to those who attended and thru them to the community, was in estimable. Those who heard the lectures were inspired to loftier aims by being the recipients o f a wider vision of life, its meaning, ends, duties and responsibilities. Even the children caught a glimpse o f what really consti tutes life. In addition an aes thetic* stimulus was afforded by high class music. The trouble with small communities is that they are in danger o f dry rot, and the Chatauqua acts as one o f the most efficient correctives for this condition. O f late years the Chatauquas have been reaching out to the small communities, and in so doing are increasing immeasurably their usefulness. They act as the incoming o f a healthy, invigorating breeze into a stagnant atmosphere. But to get the full benefit the effect must be cumulative, so we hope that there are enough progres sive citizens in this vicinitr, to insure its return another year. The Queen o f the (lowers will come into her own today in the City o f Hoses. God could have made a more beautiful flower than the rose, but doubtless He never did. What with the Shriners’ con vention and the Rose Festival, it is the week o f high jinks at the state metropolis. Were we twenty years younger we would be anxious to take it all in, but now we prefer to keep quiet and cool in the shade, and let others enjoy the tumult and the shout ing. We can no longer stand those “ mornings after.” Not Known In Estacada The Oregon City Enterprise last Sunnday, had a story o f the raiding o f a still operated by R. E. Thompson and his brother-in- law Butterly, on the ranch o f the former near Estacada, so it al leged. Upon inquiry nobody, not even the real estate men or the oldest inhabitant knows o f any such persons. Will our esteemed cotemporary be more explicit and state exactly in miles how far or how near to Estacada was the actual distance? From the ac count it might be thought that the still was found close to this city, which is a reflection on our law-abiding p e o pi e. Estacada dispenses sunshine n o t moon shine. Later we have ascertained that the place is at least ten miles east o f Estacada as the crow flies. County Superintendent Resigns J. E. Calavan, county school superintendent here for the past seven years, resigns July 1 to become s t a t e industrial club worker with headquarters at O. A. C., succeeding N. C. Maris, who has taken a position with the state dairy and food inspec tion department, according to J. A. Churchill, state superintend ent o f public instruction. Mr. Calavan was nominated for school superintendent by both the Republican and Democrat parties in the May primaries. No announcement has been made as yet as to who will be appointed to fill the unexpired term. Mr. Calavan has been associated with the industrial club work in the county since its establishment here.
