The Gospel of Good F riday.
If Christmas day is the bright
est and happiest day of the
Church year, Easter the most tri
umphant. and joyous, and Ascen
sion the most resplendent and
glorious, Good Friday though the
most sorrowful, is the most com
forting.
Heeause it throws light as
nothin# else* does, on the battling
problem o f human suffering and
misery. True, it does not solve
all the mysteries concerning this,
for evidently it is such a prob
lem, which is beyond the scope
o f human intellect, but it does
reveal enough to enable us to en
dure whatever suffering may fall
to our lot. with confidence and
even elation.
Let us see how
this is:
#
The cross stands for the suffer
ing o f the whole universe, and
He whom Good Friday reveals
hanging on that cross becomes
thus partaker o f this universal
suffering. All the sorrow* dis
tress, tribulation o f the whole
human race, past, present and
future, are fastened pu Him,
when nailed to the cross, so that
there is no pang which wrings or
will wring the human heart, bqf
vibrates likewise through His
heart causing it to throb in sym
pathy.
Now He who thus suffers, is
the God Man, so God is touched
with the sufferings of all men,
and can feel for them. In doing
this, He show’s that suffering is
no arbitrary thing which He
could do aw ay with by a word,
as if that were the case, He
would long ago have spoken that
word, but something which un
der the existing circumstances,
is unavoidable.
To understand
how this is, would require know
ledge and understanding on our
part, o f the universe and our
selves, which only a universal
mind could comprehend.
God
then, does not attempt to explain
where it is impossible but gives
us instead an astounding ro\ela
tion o f Himself as Love, which
w ii1 inspire us to have confidence
in Him. and have patience to
await the final outcome.
Good Friday reveals that none
c f us suffers alone.
I f we are
abandoned o f men we are not by
God. The outcast despised and
rejected, seeking vainly human
sympathy in the misery his sins
have brought on him, may know
that God understands and sym
pathizes with him, having been
touched with that selfsame feel
ing, and because of this know
ledge God is all the more ready
and anxious to save him. So he
need not despair, if he earnesty
repents and turns away from his
sins after that which is law
ful and right.
Again, there is no more trying
duty confronting a clergyman,
than that that o f com forting be
reaved parents, when the darling
or the pride and hope o f the fam
ily and home, has been snatched
away by death.
Words seem
powerless to afford any balm to
their bleeding hearts.
God ap
parently forgot to be gracious as
His seemed deaf to the agonizing
prayers o f the father and moth
er. What can he say to them to
relieve their anguish?
Why, he
can show them that God spared
not His own Son from death, and
so their grief has wrung the
heart of God Himself, and the
Father in heaven sorrows with
the father on earth.
Thus the
situation is relieved for it is no
act o f a tyrant, which robbed
them o f their child, but o f One
Who cannot act but in love, no
matter how severe His actions
at times may seem.
The com
fort of Good Friday is inexhaust
ible and infinite and so becomes
“ Joy o f the desolate. Light o f
the straying,
Hope, when all others die, fade
less and pure.
Here speaks the Comforter, in
God’s name saying —
Earth has no sorrow that Heaven
cannot cure.”
with the object o f assisting in
the development o f the whole
county and to further the better
acquaintance and closer associa
tion o f its members.

For the same reason people use Electric Cleaners

methods.
