The farmers a re ’ quite busy
just now getting .their grain
threshed. So far the grain has
turned out good, for which they
are thankful.
Mrs. Wm. Brown and her two
children from St. Johns, Port
land, are spending a few days at
the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Mattoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brash and
their tw’o little girls had a nar
row escape from being killed on
Thursday, as they were on their
way to Estacada. On the plank
road near the main Springwater
hill, their team got stung with
yellow jackets which made the
horses run aw’ay turning the
covered top wragon over a couple
of times. Mr. Brash had his
hand and hip quite badly hurt
and Mrs. Brash had her chest
hurt. They were all bruised
quite badly. Mrs. Brash was in
bed a couple of days.
Dr. and Mrs. G. A. Crockwell
from Portland, spent Saturday
and Sunday at the home of J. H.
Sevier and wife.
Charlie Hicinbothem and wife
and daughter Alice, from River
Mill, spent Sunday at the Sevier
home. Wm. Hicinbothem and
wife and three daughters were
also there to help eat the big
chicken dinner and to celebrate
the birthdays of Mrs. Crockwell
and Mrs. Hicinbothem.

Canada and Bull Thistle
The Canada thistle is a noxious
plant that we cannot afford to
let grow. It is sometimes con
fused with other plants the prin
cipal one being the bull thistle.
As the treatment for these two
plants is different it is essential
that we know which one of these
plants is being dealt with. The
following points of difference
should be noted:
The head of the bull thistle is
larger and of a different shape
from that of the Canada thistle.
The bull thistle is a biennial
plant and does not possess the
creeping roots so characteristic
of the Canada thistle; hence the
bull thistle plants usually occur
isolated ip the field, w hereas the
Canada thistles grow typically in
patches.
The leaves of the bull thistle
are larger and thicker than those
of the Canada thistle.
The main stem of the bull
thistle possesses a tuft of roots
close to the ground, which is not
true of the Canada thistle.
The mature plant of the bull
thistle is larger and darker green
in color than the mature plant of
the Canada thistle. The main
stem is heavier than that of the
Canada thistle.
Whenever there is doubt about
the identity of the plant, speci
mens should be sent to the
State agricultural experiment
station or at present they may be
sent to the Estacada High school
agricultural department.
