Dempsey is now the “ champ”
and Willard the "chump.” But
as the latter was guaranteed
$100,000 win or lose, no doubt he
can bear his defeat with equa
nimity. In spite of our boasted
civilization, gladiatorial contests
are just as attractive as they
were two thousand years ago.
Hats off to the plucky crew of
the mamoth dirigible, the R-34.
While obliged as a matter of pre
caution, to summon help, yet she
managed to reach her goal on her
own resources.
Her supply of
petrol was almost exhausted on
arrival. This marks the begin
ning of a new era in transatlan
tic travel. The dangers of the
air routes are probably not great
er than by water, and when peo
ple become accustomed to the
idea, it will probably be largely
patronized in fair weather, on ac
count of the novelty and the
time savek. Whether it will e-
liminate nausea is doubtful, as
the motion of the waves, is as
trying as that of the ocean, we
should think.

that hereafter War S a v i n g s
Stamps may be converted into
Savings Certificates of $100 and
$1000 denominations.
The holder of a sufficient num
ber of Thrift Stamps may now
exchange them for a $,r> War
Savings Stamp and in turn the
holder of twenty of the $5 War
Savings Stamps may convert
them into a $100 Savings Certifi
cate or the holder of two hun
dred of the $f> Stamps may turn
them in for a $1000 Savings Cer
tificate.
Conversion may be made at all
first and second class postoffices
and at all banks and trust com
panies that have qualified as
agents of the second class. The
Treasury Savings Certificates are
to be issued in registered form
and will bear the names of the
owners. They will yield four
per cent compounded quarterly
as do the War Savings Stamps.
The limit of the individual in
vestment still remains at $1000.
