The Easter Message
What is the a ttritio n
of
Easter which causes U U* be
celebrated with enthusiasm, in
spite o f growing religious indiff­
erence?
It lies in its message
which gives assurance o f three
vital needs in human life, to draw
out its best efforts for self de­
velopment and make it worth
while, in spite of all the ills and
misfortunes it may encounter in
its present existence.
These are (1) that righteous­
ness will eventually be triumph­
ant.
(2) That we are not t h e
creatures o f a day but of etern-
ity.
(3) That there are forgive­
ness and remission of sins.
Unless the first be true, it is
folly to fight evil, especially when
this involves self sacrifice and
even risk of death. Unless the se­
cond be true, materialism will he
rampant, with“ the will to power"
as its guiding principle, which
takes into consideration only pre-

Miss Grace Denny is substitut­
ing for Mrs. Gladys Graham for
a few days this week.
Thrift clubs are to be organised
in each room o f the public schools
looking toward the purchase of
Thriit and War Savings Stamps
during the year 1919-20.

The description o f our service
flag together with list o f blue and
gold stars is being forwarded to
the state library for preservation
among the Oregon war records.
Mrs. Holder addressed the
grade school pupils on customs of
India Monday morning. Costum-
es and jew elry were shown and
habits and customs discussed.
The children enjoyed it greatly.
The interscholastic base ball
season opened auspiciously for
Estacada, Gresham being defeat­
ed 2 to 0 last Friday. The score
indicates a real game in spite o f
the handicap o f a poor field.
Arrangements for commence­
ment have proceeded so far as to
secure Robt. Fry Clark, President
o f Pacific University at Forest
Grove for the Baccalaureate Sun­
day, May 25th, and Col. John
Leader for the commencement
address, Thursday evening, May
29th.
Word has been received from
Supt. Churchill that one unit o f
credit toward graduation may be
allowed for each twelve months
service in army or navy, at home
or abroad.
No student ia en­
titled to more than 3 such credits.
This should be a special induce­
ment for students to complete
their interrupted high school
education.
