Resolutions Passed by City
Council in re C. W. Devore
RESOLUTION: Introduced by
James Smith, seconded by Dr. L.
A. Welis,
Whereas, C. W. Devore, re­
corder for the City of Estacada,
having charge of the water fund
and many other matters of the
City, as such officer during the
past seven years —and,
Whereas, C. W. Devore has left
the City of Estacada taking funds
with him belonging t<f the said
City, and is unable to be found
and,
Whereas, C. W. Devore left his
books in such shape that it is im­
possible to determine the exact
amount of the City’s money he
has, and
Whereas, Mrs. H. P. Devore
has made, to the City Council of
Estacada, an offer to pay said
City $1000.00 in satisfaction of
the amount taken by C. W. De­
vore,
It is therefore Resolved that
the City of Estacada, accept said
amount of $1000.00 in full for all
claims against said C. W. Devore,
and be it further Resolved,
That the Council recommend
that the criminal proceedings
heretofore taken against C. W.
Devore be dismissed.

with the tonsilitis.
Mrs. C. H. Paddiscn was the
guest of Portland friends recent­
ly.
Mrs. Annie Iíeckett and daugh­
ter of Portland were Eagle Creek
visitors Sunday.
A. N. Orke and wife, after re­
maining a week at their farm
home, returned to Portland on
Sunday.
Roy Douglass. accompanied|by
his mother, Mrs. Viola Douglass
and Mrs. R. B. Gibson, made a
business trip to Portland last
Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Woodle who
were down to their son’s Malcolm
Woodle, home for over a week,
helping to care for him and his
family, who have been ill with
the ttu, returned home Friday.

our personality. The fact that
one’s education and training may
be largely increased and improved
by working on the subconscious
mind, was also presented for con­
sideration.
Thursday mornirfg, Mr. Almack
lectured especially to the High
School students, and the seventh
and eighth grades were invited
over. His lecture at this time
was "The Business of Living’’
and was largely along the line of
vocational guidance. This lecture
was especially helpful, supple­
menting as it does the course of#
instruction in that direction being
given in the schools. The pupils
were mucn interested in his des­
cription of the various types of
people, the mental, the motor,
the nervous, the sanguine, the
digestive, etc., and in following
his suggestions in regard to the
choosing of occupations.
In the afternoon Mr. Almack
had an address more especially
for the parents of whom six or
seven were present, in spite of
the extensive advertising of the
lecture. His subject was "The
Function of the School” which
was a fitting supplement to his
morning lecture and was as
thoroughly enjoyed by the stu­
dents as his previous talk. The
chief function of the school is to
make the child self-supporting,
by providing as far as equipment
will permit, instruction in effici­
ency in some occupation suited
to the child, by which he or she
can make a living. This is
brought about by the full co-oper­
ation of pupils, parents, and
teachers, and school authorities.
Following this lecture there
was a short business meeting of
the Parent-Teachers’ Association-
the first of the year. It was de­
cided to adopt for the present
year the third, Wednesday night
in each month for regular meet­
ing night.
The climax of the institute v\as
reached Friday evening when the
University presented R o b e r t
Louis Barron in violin recital.
Mr. Barron had a well balanced
program of four parts, which
afforded satisfactory evidence of
his splendid ability with the most
popular of musical instruments.
In technic and finish of expression
one seldom hears, outside of
musical centers, one so much the
master of his art. Every one who
was fortunate enough to be pres­
ent expressed his appreciation
with hearty applause and en­
thusiastic comment. Mr. Barron
was assisted at the piano by Miss
Aurora Potter whose ability as an
accompanist can not be too highly
commended.
We hope we may be able to
continue these evenings and trust
that many more will feel their
worth and lend their support by
their attendance.
