What is the County Agents Job?
A good many people are not
yet familiar with the work done
by the County
Agricultural
Agent, and ask why he should
be on the county payroll.
It is
sometimes difficult to explain
what this work is because there
is so much of it.
In general, the County Agent
demonstrates to farmers im
proved methods, or valuable new
varieties, on their own farms.
Nine tenths o f the farmers or
iginally came from Missouri, and
they have to be showm.
The
O R E G O N
work in Clackamas County has
been disrupted by having the
first two County Agents join the
army.
The present incumbent
has also had much to do in getting
out information for the govern
ment, and at the request o f the
Dept, o f Agriculture a large
amount o f time was spent in look
ing up the facts as to the proper
classification o f farmers in the
draft. Now that conditions will
probably settle down to normal
again, a program o f work is be
ing laid out for next year which
will deal with some o f the main
problems the farmers are up
against.
The following are some o f the
lines along which I will work;
Labor Supply; Utilization of va
cant land; Mole and Gopher con
trol; Canada thistle control; Live
stock Improvement; Publication
o f Farm Bureau News, with free
advertising; Fertilizer demon
strations; Farm Accounts; Drain
age; Poultry; Cooperative Buy
ing; Seed Improvement.
In future articles, I will tell
how I expect to go at this work,
and what we may expect to
accomplish.
R. E. Scott, County Agent.

Letter of Appreciation
I
San Francisco, Nov. 15, T8
Dear Editor:
As the United War Work
Campaign draws to a close I have
been asked by Mr. Lyman L.
Pierce, western department cam
paign director, to express to you
his appreciation o f the valuable
assistance your newspaper has
rendered.
Never before in the history o f
this country has a drive for funds
been so dependent upon the news
papers for success.
With the
speaking program virtually elim
inated because o f influenza con
ditions, with schools in most
sections closed, with public gath
erings forbidden, the o n l y
method o f getting our message
to the people has been through
the newspapers.
We feel that we owe the loyal,
patriotic, unselfish newspapers o f
the* west our gratitude and
thanks, and in behalf o f Mr.
Pierce, and the members o f the
executive committee in the west
ern department, I want to ex
press to you our deep appreci
ation for all you have done to
make this campaign a success.
I am,
Very sincerely yours, ’
F. F. Runyon,
Director o f Publicity, United
War Work Campaign, Western
Department.
