Owing to th e accum ulation of stocks
of 97,000,000 pounds of bacon from
A m erica, th e dispatch said, th e r a tio n
ing of bacon would be a b a n doned for
th e tim e.
Since this e n orm ous stock w as for
civilian req u irem e n ts and probably a
m uch g r e a t e r q u a n tity had been sa fe
ly landed for allied a rm y needs it
does not require e x tre m e im agination
to visualize th e long procession of
cargo ships which ha s ste a m ed across
w ith this one ite m of th e food sup
ply.
All th e cargo space of from eight
to tw elve fre ig h te rs of a v e rage size
would be req u iied to tra n s p o rt 97,-
000,000 pounds.

Your h e a r t thrilled, too, to th a t
news, which now has been repeated

T he little shivers of
pride ran down your spinal columns,
wom en of Oregon, us you rea d of th e
th in g s those boys did over there. And
honestly, dow n in your h e a rt, didn’t ’
you say, for th e th o u sa n d th time, "I

T his is one of th e light t a n k s which played such an im p o rta n t part in
th e rec e n t allied drive on th e Montdidier-Amiens front.

A m erican com m unique h a s m entioned th eir use as yet.
T h e "w h ip p e t” is said to be a ble to outspeed and o u tm a n e u v e r a man.
T h e ir g r e a te s t use has been in c ru s h in g th e m achine gun posts which the
r e tr e a tin g G e rm a n s left behind to hold off puisuers. T h e e n orm ous bag
of prisoners w as due to th e “ w h ip p e t's ” ability to drive lanes through all
obstacles, evade hostile a rtille ry fire by th e ir speed an d m aneuvering
ability, and even force th e s u rr e n d e r of artilleiy .
A large p a rt of the F o u rth L iberty Loan probably will be needed for the
building of such land “d e s tr o y e rs ” .
