Corduroy Road Hurts Trade Eastern Clackam ay News Published every Thursday at Estacada, Oregon It. M. Standirih, Kditor and ManaK^r Kntt*red at the postoffice in Estacada, Oregon, an second-class mail. SUBSCRI PTI ON One year Si x m o n t h s . K a TBS . . . . $1.50 . . 75 Thursday, .Ian. 31, Ibis Let's seme of us devotees of Dame Nicotine get up a tobacco fund for our enlisted boys. Of course, we would accept contrib utions from non-tobacco users, too. Such funds arc being s u b scribed to in many places, but this one would be to furnish the "vile weed" to such of our home boys, who are already on the downward path, enjoying the alluring habit. Boxes, suitable for contribu tions of tobacco, money or trade chips are now being placed in several of the Estacada places of business and similar ones will probably hold forth in some of our rural stores. Each box will be labeled, "Tobacco or Candy for Our Own Enlisted Boys, Drop Your Contribution Here." Let each man, when laying in his own supply of tobacco, oc casionally buy an extra package for our soldiers and sailors, or drop the equivalent in cash in the box. For such of our boys who do < not use tobacco, other luxuries can be sent them, such as candy or gum. The idea being that every time a parent, friend or organization is sending a box to one of our boys, they are to ad vise the News office, so that an enclosure of tobacco or an equiv alent may be made. So there are just two things you must remember - first, make your contribution to the fund, and secondly, if you are sending a package to an enlisted man from this community, see that you get something from this lund to enclose in it. The News has refrained from attempting to publish a list of the Eastern Clackamas County l>oys and their classifications, under the questionnaire draft regula tions. owing to the many changes made in these classifications, af ter the first announcements. Al so many are subject to final de cision by the Portland board, in cases where industrial or agricul- tural exemptions are asked. A number of our boys though, who are in Class 1, are this week taking the physical examinations la*lore the examining board at Oregon City. One of the big winter show eventsof the whole Pacific North west will be the ninth annual Portland Automobile, Truck and Tractor Show, to be held in Port land from February 7th to 13th. ] Joseph DeShazerand son Ralph of Dover were Estacada business visitors Monday. Mr. DeShazer says: "The Do ver trade is now going largely to Sandy, as it is but 7 miles dis tant, with Estacada 11 miles. Bu\ if the tw’o or three mile stretch of corduroy road on the Exon Hill was placed in passable condition, the Dover trade would come to Estacada, as the road from the George Bridge into Estacada is an excellent one, and with automobiles the slight difference in distance as com pared with Sandy, would be no hindrance." It might be a wise move for the Estacada business men to work for the betterment of the Exon Hill Road, for it will be re membered that the aid given the George Bridge Road a few years ago, has been one of the best social and financial investments ever entered into by the local business men. County School Superintendent Calavan and Prof. Allen of the Industrial Club work of the O. A. C. Extention Dept., spent two or three days in Estacada and vicinity early this week, in the interest of club work and the furtherance of the sale of thrift stamps. If you feel that you are well qualified for a member of the Es- tacida City Council, or Captain of the Volunteer Fire Department or member of the School Board, one or all, make your application at once. But, as to the vacancy on the school board, now would be a suitable time to select a woman to serve in that important office, for with suffrage here and also many local women well qualified, a feminine member should be add ed, as many questions now com ing before the board require the judgement and special knowledge only found in the "female of the species! All Rebekahs are requested to be present at the next meeting, scheduled for February 13th, as at that time the President of the Rebekah Assembly will be pres ent.
