The debate between the Esta­
cada negative team and the Hub­
bard iitli mative was held Friday
night, in ihe E. H. S. auditorium.
It was very interesting and
held the audience spell bound
from start to finish. Estacada
won unanimously.
Not long after, word came that
Salem had been victorious at
home and at Hubbard, thus w in­
ning the North Willamette cham­
pionship. Our affirmative team,
which- debated at Salem, was
said to have put up a very good
debate. The Salem negative won
by a "close shave".
One o f the things noteworthy
o f mentioning was the warm re­
ception Salem high school gave
the team when they arrived.
A Red Cross auxiliary was or­
ganized in Viola a short time
ago, with Mrs. La Croy. chair­
man. Mrs. Grace Miller, treasur­
er and Miss Thompson, secre­
tary.
Among the news items from
Elwood, which were received
last week too late for publication,
we are informed that Elwood is
now known as East Colton, and
the residents are proud o f having
furnished 11 members to the Red
Cross. They also report the com­
ing nuptials o f Henry Cadanau
and Miss Anna R. Struff o f El­
wood and George Moorehead and
Miss Erna Meibs, form erly o f
that vicinity.
Monday afternoon, January 28,
the E. H. S. student body was
entertained b y superintendent
Calavan, who lectured on ‘T h rift
Stam ps". Prof. Allen o f 0. A. C.
and Frank Ew ing o f Viola, talked
on "Industrial Club W o rk ".
The basket ball team is im prov­
ing rapidly and is sticking right
wi th the practise until late at
night. Lately some o f the well
skinned knees and elbows have
been given a chance to get well.
They
were developed in the
Adelphie and Websterian game
which was played last Friday
night, when the Adelphics just
walked away with the big end o f
the score.
Mrs. George Forman o f Barton
is reported to be recuperating
from an operation, which she
underwent at a Portland hospi­
tal last week.

Miss Virginia Scott o f Estacada
is now well on the road to recov­
ery follow ing an operation for
appendicitis performed by Dr.
Adix at the Good Samaritan Hos­
pital last Thursday.
Everybody is gettin g down to
business this week, even the
Freshmen, as the first semester
examinations start Wednesday.
Some o f the classes are away be­
hind so they are doubling the
length o f their lessons.
Mrs. Maud Dittebrandt and
twin daughters o f Spokane were
guests at the home o f her sister
Mrs. E. W. Bartlett o f Estacada,
last Friday and Saturday.
J. R. Cassidy, form erly Esta-
cada’ s painter and paper-hanger,
lately o f Canada, spent a few
days here last week.
Chris Olson, a veteran barber
o f Portland, is now in charge o f
the Estacada barber shop, which
temporarily has been conducted
by Dave Eschleman, who has
lately accepted a position with
the P. R. L. & P. Co. at the Far­
aday power plant.

Thursday afternoon at a party
given by Mrs. A. E. Sparks.
A new cement sidewalk is be­
ing laid on Broadway in front o f
the Krigbaum Pool Hall, the
work being done by John Osborne
and T. J. Reagan o f Estacada.

made several trips to Portland
last week, as a witness in a fed­
eral investigation.
