Eastern Clackamas News Re-Advertising Paving Bids (Formerly Estacada Progress) There is now appearing in the News, the advertising for bids for the concrete paving of Broad way, as authorized by the Esta cada City Council and property owners. The advertising for these bids appeared a couple couple of weeks ago, but owing to changes having to be made in the specification, it was decided to postpone the date of opening the bids until Tuesday evening, July 25th. The Street & Public Property Committee was fortunate in ob taining the services of Rev. Spiess in the drawing up of proper spec ifications and are also indebted to Messrs. Robley and Searing of the P. R. L. '& P. Company, , for ex pert advice. A representative o f the Oswe go Cement Company was in E s tacada last week, in the interests o f his company’s product. His company offers to furnish an ex pert cement inspector to take charge of the job free, in case the successful bidder will use Os wego cement. Inasmuch as the Oswego Cement Company are just entering the field, with a product which meets all of the re quirements for standard Portland cement, it would be to their ad vantage to give Estacada the ben efit o f their best efforts, asan ad vertisement, a n d the bidding, contractors would do well to con sider their proposition. Published every Thursday at Estacada, Oregon K. M. Stumlish. Editor and Manager Entered at the postoffice in Estacada, Oregon, as second-class mail. S ubscription R ates One year - Six months - - - $1.00 .50 Thursday, July 20, 1916 The editor is sorry to note that a few former subscribers feel hurt, at having had their sub scriptions stopped, just because they were not paid in advance. In a few instances, the former subscribers felt that an injustice was heaped upon them personal ly; some feeling that it was a very radical move to make over such a little matter as a dollar. The News has but one excuse to offer; namely that the Postal Regulations require that all sub scriptions be paid in advance, on newspapers mailed under the pub lishers’ special rates, and no fav oritism was shown. There is now an opportunity for all Estaeadians and farmers of this part o f the county to dem onstrate the actual amount of progressiveness present; as the R. C. Deming Packing Company, Estacada’s growing industry, has recently incorporated and a cam paign to sell stock is now under way. This campaign has, to date, met with a liberal response, with many Estacada business men al ready subscribing for from one to four shares o f stock, and it is hoped that the campaign among the growers, which will soon be underway, will meet with as lib eral a response, The investment of real hard earned money in a local industry is the highest type o f citizen ship and represents the investors faith in his home community, better than all of the speeches and hurrahs ever uttered. And lastly, the investment should be a good one from a financial standpoint. Either State Game Warden, Carl I). Shoemaker is not ac quainted with the’ ever present, chronic fiolitical aspirations of Oregon City’s lawyers, or he thinks the ••esidents o f Eastern Clackamas County are not, when he attempts to make us believe that the proposed appointment of a successor to Ben S. Patton, was not a political move. Cary Now Heads Cazadero Business! W. K. Cary took over the busi ness of the Cazadero Mercantile! Co. this week, having purchased; the interests of Harry Snyder, who with his wife are leaving shortly for Meehanicsburg, Pa., where they will remain until next Spring. Mr. and Mrs. Cary and Mrs. Nina B. To Prevent Forest Courts Aim Fires, Aim ing to prevent the big for est fires of former years, the Clackamas county court will send to every road supervisor in a tim bered d i s t r i c t instructions to clean up his roads, remove rub bish and clean out dry under brush. J. W . Ferguson, o f Estacada, district fire warden, appeared be fore the county court last week, recommending this act. Letters will be sent the road supervisors at once. A large part o f the taxable property in Clackamas county consists o f timber, so that the county in instructing its super visors to clean up roads to pre vent forest fires is working in its own interests.
