Pesznecker GARAGE E stacada, O regon In a drizzling rain, about a score of men attended the May 22nd meeting of the Eastern Ciackamas Taxpayers’ League at the Springwater Grange Hall, the gathering included a number of loyal taxpayers from Bartqn, who had made the long trip. As is the case in all poorly a t tended meetings, little enthusi asm could be engendered, not withstanding the especially in teresting talks, given by local and visiting speakers. R. C. Deming, promotor of the new Estacada cannery, briefly outlined the contemplated work of that industry, explaining, the kind of small fruits wanted by the cannery and paying special attention to the maintaining of the highest grade of fruit only. A few questions were asked the speaker, relating to the packing and shipping of prunes from the plant, later in the season. District Attorney Gilbert C. Hedges of Oregon City, who had not been expected to be able to appear on the program at this time, arrived soon after the o- pening of the meeting, having motored over from the county seat, despite the had roads via the Viola route. Mr. Hedges gave a rousing good talk, sub stantially defending the past and future actions of his office, ex plaining in detail the workings of the prohibition enforcement department and showing that the $3.000. appropriated to en force the prohibition laws, rath er than being consumed, w as be ing increased by added fires, with about $3500. on hand now' and much more in sight. Had it been known that Mr. Hedges would appear on the pro gram, undoubtedly a much larg er assembly of taxpayers w’ould have braved the disagreeable weather and attended the meet ing. The principal speaker was Mr. C. L. Starr of Portland. Mr. Starr is a well known attorney, specializing on tax law and was for some time connected with the State Tax Commission and at present representing a clientele of large timber owning compan ies. whose interest he is protect ing in all matters pertaining to tax matters. Mr. Starr was a forceful speak er and enthusiastic on his pet subject of taxes, tax levying and tax collection. He urged the taxpayers to take a greater in terest in tax matters, asking that they personally attend the meetings of all annual tax levy ing bodies and personally look after their own affairs and not wait until too late and then find fault with their assessed valua tion o r r a t e o f assessment. Briefly the speaker outlined the advantages to be gained by the creation of the unit system in school districts, with the elim ination of the present school dis trict boundaries. The June meeting will occur at Estacada, Saturday afternoon. June 24th. Bi:£ Day At Garfield Grange All members and friends of the Garfield Grange are invited to attend next Saturday’s all day session. All are urged to come early and meet the visitors and speakers, among them being C. N. McAlister of the Portland Union Stock Yards and E. E. Faville, publisher of the Western Farmer, both of whom are w’ell known to local audiences and both ot whom are bringing their wives to show them what fit e places Garfield and Estacada are. Priscillas Aid Library The women of the Currinsville Priscilla Club, who a couple of weeks ago, staged a successful playlet, supper and entertain ment, are making a donation of $5. towards the Estacada library, realizing the value of .the local libraiy not only to the Estacada people but to the entire com munity. The old Sandl'ord place in Up per Garfield, recently owned by J. M. Whelan, has again chang ed hands, the latest deal being with a Portland man, who will soon occupy the property. Mr. and Mrs. Whelean and family last w e e k moved with their household goods to Portland.
