Council Meeting
WON IN THE LIST 8 MINUTES
The Estacada City Council met
in special session in the City Hall
last Tuesday evening and com
pleted the details of the city and
special road budgets, and discuss
ed the adoption of better book
keeping methods for the offices
of Recorder and Treasurer.
The council inves; ¡gated the re
ports current in Portland papers
regarding the accident to Estaca
da City Marshall A. G. Ames last
Saturday and after listening to
testimony from Marshal Ames
and others, decided to prefer no
charges against him, unless fur
ther investigatio : discloses suffi
cient grounds. According to Mr.
Ames account of the accident, he
was in no way to blame and two
similar ones have occured in the
same place, one previous and
one since.
He furthermore states that he
was not intoxicated and the tes
timony of o.hers substantiates
his claim.
E. H. S. Defeats St. Johns
14 to 12
The biggest crowd of enthus
iastic rooters that has attended a
foot ball game this season, got a
$1 run for a 25c ticket at last
Saturday’s game, between the
James-John High School team of
St. Johns and the Estacada foot
hall hoys.
To name Estacada’s star would
be to show the entire line-up
from Wagner, Denny, and Dale
behind the line to the boys who
formed the stone-wall itself.
The Jimmie-Johnies were cap
tained and generated by a Chi
nese athlete, who played quarter
back and all hats were taken otf
to this heady, snappy player, but
for whom the team would have
offered little opposition, although
each man played his individual
part well.
The local boys probably were a
trifle heavier than their oppon
ents, but this added weight was
not what won for E. H. S., but
regular old fashioned hard line
plunging.
At the outset of the game, Es
tacada carried the ball to within
a few yards of their goal by a
series o f line plunges, then
changed tactics and attempted a
pass which resulted disastrously,
their opponents getting the ball
and until within about eight min
utes of the end of the game, had
possession o f the pig-skin the
majority o f the time, making big
gains and 12 points by expertly
using the forward pass and other
trick plays.
Soon after the beginning o f the
last quarter when Estacada’s
chances were as good as a fern in
a Garfield apple orchard, the
home gang got hold of the l>all
and by line plunges, coupled with
a fair break in luck, ran it
through for a touch-down with
the goal kick added, leaving the
score 7 to 12. The second touch
down with its well kicked goal
followed rapidly and among the
cheers and yells o f the students
and townspeople, the St John’s
boys were defeated.
This was Estacada’s first op
posing team which expertly play
ed the open game of football with
trick plays and well aimed passes
and they came near meeting de
feat. Had the game been played
in the rain or with a wet ball, St.
John’s wonderful otfense would
have utterly failed.
Estacada
must practice a defensive system
to offset Saturday’s style of of
fense and furthermore must be

Livestock Luncheon
Promis s Crowd
From present indications there
will be from 60 to 100 livestock
growers from this part of the
county, as the guests of the P.
R. L. & P. Co. at the luncheon
and meeting to be held at the
1 Hotel Estacada next Saturday
| noon.
With the cooperation of the
young ladies in the telephone of
fice, the Progress has already re
ceived reseivations from the ma
jority of the stock growers in
this vicinity.
In order that Mine-Host Lauryy
of the Estacada Hotel may know
how many guests to figure on, it
was necessary that reservat ions be
made by Thursday evening. In '
as much as but a few women
have expressed a desire to attend
this meeting, it has been decided
best to make it a "stag atfair” ,

more on the alert for double pass

Estacada is handicapped by not
having a second or scrub team to
practice against. It would be
great sport for all concerned if
some of the boys o f Estacada
would organize a scrub team and
give the high school boys a good
scrap with its consequent real
practice.
Bob Morton of E. H. S. ’ 13 ref
ereed the game well and with the
aid of linesmen Guthrie, Somers
and St. Johns representatives
handled the game in a good
sportsmanlike manner.
E. H. S. will play Milwaukie
on the Estacada grounds next
Saturday afternoon and everyone
should attend this contest. Many
people have not attended these
games because they do not un
derstand the game of foot-ball
but even without a technical
knowledge of the game, they will
thoroughly enjoy the sport and
incidentally help the student ath

Harvest Festival
The Harvest Festival in the
Springwater church last Sunday
was well attended by a happy
and grateful throng of people,
which filled the edifice to over
flowing. The music was well ap
preciated and the chorus under
Mr. David Horner’s inspiring di
rection sang two great chorus
works of Hayden and Handel:
“ The Heavens Are Telling” from
the “ Creation” and the “ Halle-
julah Chorus” from the “ Mes
siah.”
Mr. Fred Horner’s solo from
the “ Messiah” was listened to in
rapt attention.
The morning sermon w a s
preached by Rev. C. F. Aue, the
pastor, and the afternoon sermon
by Mr. Walter Givens of Esta
cada.
Everything, including the din
ner, was excellent.

Instructive Parent-Teachers
Meeting
Last Thursday
afternoon’s
meeting of the Parent-Teachers’
Assn, at the Estacada school was
especially well attended and the
35 or more present were well re
paid with the fine program, which
had been arranged by Mrs. Maud
Graham.
Dr. Meier of Portland was the
leading speaker, her address deal
ing with “ School Hygiene” and
in the course of her talk, she
plainly pointed out to the assem
bled mothers, their duty and the
care which they should exercise
over the health of their children,
in detecting adenoids, defective
hearing, etc.
The musical program included
a solo by Mrs. Claude W. Devore
and four beautiful violin duets by
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Aue,
A part of the prog am consist
ed of a feature rendered by the
pupils of Mrs. Graham’s class.
Dr. R. Morse of Estacada con
ducted an interesting and in
structive “ question box” .
The next meeting will be
Thursday, November 11th. The
topic will be “ The Study and Ap
preciation of Pictures as Taught
in the Grades” . The program
will be in charge of Miss Wash.
The club meets the second
Thursday afternoon of each
month in the auditorium of the
school, and is arranging to have
a series of lectures delivered to
the mothers by Miss McQuaid of
the school faculty, covering the
subject of home making, includ
ing cooking, millinery work,
home decoration, etc.
As a suggestion, the Parent-
Teachers Association could not
father or rather mother a more
important undertaking than the
establishment of a public kinder
garten in connection with the lo
cal schools.
Feature Films
As advertised elsewhere in this
paper. Mgr. Sparks of the Esta
cada Family Theatre has complet
ed plans for the showing of the
famous Kleine-tyiison Feature
Films, every Wednesday even
ing, beginning October 27th.
For some time past there has been
a desire expressed by the “ movie
fans” of Estacada and vicinity
for high grade feature pictures
and Mr. Sparks has gone to a
heavy expense to satisfy this de
mand and trusts that the public
will back him up by regularly
attending.
