Destructive Orchard Disease
Pre-Inventory Specials
For E V E R Y T H I N G In
In an effort to prevent a spread
of fireblight, the most destructive
of apple and pear tree diseases,
which has made its appearance
among some orchards of Marion
county, a bulletin is being sent
out to farmers and orchardists
by County Fruit Inspector C. O.
Constable.
Inspector Constable is devoting
his entire time to stamp out the
blight and the county court has
promised him its assistance. In
the bulletin symptoms and means
of eradication of the disease are
given. The bulletin follows:
“ Your attention is called to the
fact that fire blight, most des
tructive of all apple and pear
diseases, has recently made its
appearance in Marion county.
You are asked to join with the
people of this county in a deter
mined effort to stamp out the
disease at once. The county
court appreciates the seriousness
of the situation and has promis
ed its assistance to the farmers
and fruit growers in this fight.
Your fruit inspector is now de
voting his entire time in an effort
to discover the localities in which
lire blight is present, and to
assist the growers in eradicating
it from such places.
“ You can secure aid for your
self and help in this work, which
is being done for the whole coun
ty, if you will make a search for
possible cases of fire blight
among the quinces, pears, apples,
service berries, hawthorn, wild
crabapple, etc., on or near your
place, and send suspicious-look
ing branches to the inspector.
He will have them identified,
and if blight is proved, he will
visit your place as soon as possi
ble and advise you how to get
rid of it in the best possible way
without the danger of spreading
such a contagious and extremely
virulent disease, as the blight
may easily be spread by one who
does not know the disease and
how to handle it.
Look for scattered dead branch
es, shoots or spurs, with leaves
that look as though scorched
still hanging to them. On such
blighted parts the bark is dark
colored and sometimes milky
drops of ooze containing count
less bacteria appear on the sur
face where they harden. Large
dead spots, or cankers are some
times found on the body and
limbs. In tne present outbreak
the quince is most commonly at
tacked, but the blight occurs also
on apple and pear, as well as on
service berry, hawthorn and
other wild trees of the apple
family. Insects are the dissem
inators of the disease.
