If the new weekly magazine,
called the Oregon Voter, edited
by C. C. Chapman, the late sec
retary o f the Portland Commer
cial Club, maintains the high
standard which its first two is
sues have shown, it will be worth
double the present $2. subscrip
tion price.
In the current issue o f May
8th. appears an article entitled,
“ Costly in Clackamas” aimed at
and squarely hitting the mark,
as to the present costly and
wasteful system o f road building
in Clackamas county. This is
aimed at the so called hard sur
faced roads and their present
condition, after less than a year
o f wear
The blame is not aimed at the
taxpayer, but at those officials,
who tried to get first class pave
ment for half price.
How to Catch Moles
A good story is going the
rounds o f the Eagle Creek boys,
at the expense o f Cogswell, the
genial merchant.
Cogs, as he is familiarly called,
has been for some time past try
ing to exterminate the moles in
his garden. In his innocent and
trusting way, he believed all that
the printed directions on the can
o f “ Carbide Mole Exterminator”
claimed, namely: that an applica
tion o f the contents o f said can
would immediately asphyxiate
the rodents, leaving them sprink
led upon the ground, their hind
legs pointing Heavenward and
front ones crossed upon their cold
bosoms, with a “ Rest in Peace”
expression on their upturned
faces.
Cogs thoroughly tested the ex
terminator, and next morning
showed the boys the results o f
the previous night’s slaughter.
Each succeeding morn witnessed
a larger crop o f dead moles, until
a total o f twenty rewarded the
persistent furrier.
It finally developed that the
neighbors were trapping all the
moles possible and
liberally
sprinkling Cogswell’ s
garden
each night.
Like a good sport, Cogs stood I
the treats and joking and, like a
good merchant, incidentally sold
enough cans o f carbide, to offset
the costs.
