taxpayer, but at those officials,

How to Catch Moles
A good story is going the
rounds o f the Eagle Creek boys,
at the expense o f Cogswell, the
genial merchant.
Cogs, as he is familiarly called,
has been for some time past try
ing to exterminate the moles in
his garden. In his innocent and
trusting way, he believed all that
the printed directions on the can
o f “ Carbide Mole Exterminator”
claimed, namely: that an applica
tion o f the contents o f said can
would immediately asphyxiate
the rodents, leaving them sprink
led upon the ground, their hind
legs pointing Heavenward and
front ones crossed upon their cold
bosoms, with a “ Rest in Peace”
expression on their upturned
faces.
Cogs thoroughly tested the ex
terminator, and next morning
showed the boys the results o f
the previous night’s slaughter.
Each succeeding morn witnessed
a larger crop o f dead moles, until
a total o f twenty rewarded the
persistent furrier.
It finally developed that the
neighbors were trapping all the
moles possible and
liberally
sprinkling Cogswell’ s
garden
each night.
Like a good sport, Cogs stood I
the treats and joking and, like a
good merchant, incidentally sold
enough cans o f carbide, to offset
the costs.
