AMERICAN VOLUNTEERS FOR FRENCH ARMY Villa Demands Resigna Prune Crop Not Large tion ot Gen. Carranza NEWS OF THE WEEK But Exceptionally Good N ew berg—J u s t west of New berg are the famous reil bills of Dundee, where the Italian prune and the English wal- ' nut grow to perfection. A t the Prince orchard are the oldest E nglish w alnut trees in the sta te planted for commer- | rial purposes. For many m iles the hills are covered w ith prune trees, chiefly Italian , though the French prune, the leading v ariety in C alifor nia, is grown to some e x te n t here, but j it is called th e P etite, and does not at- | tain th e California size. A trip through some of the prune ! orchards in the Dundee d istric t was | made recently. There has been a gen- I eral im pression th a t the crop would be light. In some orchards th a t proved j to be tru e, but the prunes are unusual- I ly large. It was fo rtu n ate for the prune oreh- ardists th a t the hop picking season ended e a rlie r than usual, for the : prunes began to drop about three weeks ahead of tim e this season, and Am erican residents of Paris, who have organized a v o lunteer regim ent to fight In the French army, are hare \ many o f those who had found employ- seen in the Place de l'Opera en route to th eir drilling place and carrying the S tars and Stripes. [ m ent in the hop fields a t once w ent to work in the prune orchards. The Eng lish walnuts are also ripening earlier th is year. In most of the orchards prune pick ing will be finished this week. It is noted th a t those on the lower eleva tions were not injured by the rains as much as were those up higher. ■ It is said th a t a t the Allan F ru it com pany's orchard of 250 acres, the crop was in jured from $8000 to $10,000. This is one of the largest orchards in th a t lo cality and gives employm ent in the busy season to about 140. This com pany has a packing plant a t Dnudee, though the orchard is about three m iles west of town. W. S. Allan, whose o rc h ard .js about a mile west of Dundee, is the pioneer prune grow er of th a t d istrict. He does not consider the fact th a t they acre large as being of special value to the growers, as the rule of buyers has been to fix the basis of price on the largest size. The Oregon crop is short and the C alifornia crop will am ount to 85,000,000 or 90,000,000 pounds as against its usual crop of 200,000,000. Chihuahua, Mex.—The im m ediate resignation of Carranza as first chief of the constitutionalists is the only basis on which General Francisco Villa will agree to the settlem ent of difficul ties betw een him self and Carranza. This was his reply to m essages of offi cials in Mexico C ity who protested against his a ttitu d e tow ards Carranza. Villa declared he never would accept Carranza as head of the republic. His reply, as given out here follow s: “ I lam ent the circum stances th at have brought about grave danger, but sincerely protest th a t my sole am bition will be to arrange ex istin g difficulties w ithout shedding blood if possible. “ 1 em phatically declare, however, th a t the only move th a t can bring about cessation of hostilities on my part is th a t Venustiano Carranza de liver suprem e command to Fernando Iglesias Calderon so th at, in the the shortest possible tim e, elections may be called. A t the same tim e I declare I shall not accept C arranza as presi dent or vice president or president ad interim of the republic. “ I shall prove the rectitude of my intentions and the disinterestedness which anim ates the force of this divis ion. L ater the world will realize where re sts true disinterestedness and •vhere abortive am bitions.” General Resume of Important Events Throughout the W ord The hospital ship sent from New York has reached England.
