Mexico C ity— Elections for presi dent, vice president, deputies and sen ators were held Sunday in th a t portion of the republic controlled by the Huer- a t governm ent. Indifference was m an ifested everyw here. General H u erta appeared to be the favorite candidate for the presidency and G eneral B lanquet for the vice presidency. Mellen, form er president of the New York, New Haven & H artford and the Bos ton & Maine R ailroad company; Fred erick C. Moseley, of F. S. Mosely & Co., Boston brokers; the late Ralph D. G illett, of W estfield, and the invest m ent com m ittees of tw o savings banks of th is city, were indicted by the Mid dlesex county grand jury on various charges in connection w ith the finances of the Hampden R ailroad from Bonds- ville to Springfield. Mr. G illett was president of the Hampden corporation. The road was built a year ago as a link to connect the C entral Massa chusetts division of the Boston & Maine w ith the New York, New H av en & H artford railroad, but has never been operated, an a tte m p t to obtain the leg islatu re’s consent to its lease to the Boston & Maine having failed. The indictm ents against Mellen, Moseley and G illett allege conspiracy to induce the investm ent com m ittee of the tw o banks to lend a total of $45,000 to the corporation. The notes securing the loans were indorsed by the Hampden Investm ent company, or ganized by Mr. G illett to finance the construction of the road, which cost about $4,000,000. The investm ent com m ittee of the E ast Cam bridge Savings bank is in dicted on three counts of conspiracy to lend sums of $20,000, $16,000 and $5000 to the Ham pden railroad. These indictm ents charge th a t the Hampden Investm ent company was not a sub sta n tia l surety or indorser of the notes of the railroad corporation given to the bank. Sim ilar indictm ents were returned ag ain st the investm ent com m ittee of the Cam bridge Savings bank, the am ounts named being $25,000, $25,- 000, $22,500 and $20,250. F rederick Moseley was indicted also on six counts, involving the alleged larceny of sum s am ounting to $112,500 from the banks, and Mr. Mellen was indicted as an accessory b e f ^ e the fact on five of these counts. Ten other counts allege th a t Mellen, Moseley and G illett “ conspired to steal and did ste a l’’ various am ounts in volved in the transactions w ith the two banks. M embers of the Moseley brokerage firm, including Seawell H. Fessenden, Neial Rantoul, Stephen P. Crowley, B enjam in P. Moseley and W illiam S. Clough, w ere indicted on e ig h t counts charging conspiracy to steal. Naco, A riz.—A telephone m essage in which C. L. Montague, Am erican consular agent a t Cananea, Mex., re quested th a t P resident Wilson be noti fied of the serious situation resulting from the strik e of 2500 m iners em ployed by the Cananea Consoldiated Copper company, was received here Saturday. It was sent by Montague, who de clared th a t he was in a house which was surrounded by several hundred strikers, who gathered to prevent the departure from Cananea by autom o bile of George Kingdon, superintend ent of the m ines of the company in volved. The strik e rs presented to the com pany an ultim atum , to which a reply was asked in five days. Pending the reply, the m iners, it was said, desired to resum e work, but the officiais of the mine, up to a late hour, had not decid ed w hether to perm it them to do so. The principal demands of the strik ers w ere a 25 per cent increase in wages ; a 20 per cent reduction in the prices asked for various commodities a t the com pany's general store; changes in the regulations governing the com pany's hospitals, and a daily payday. P ro tests w ere made again st the e s tablishm ent of a so-called labor bureau and the m aintenance of a blacklist. The situ atio n a t Cananea is consid ered so serious th a t the Southw estern railroad has stopped tak in g freight destined for Cananea, though no actual disorder, other than the practical im prisonm ent of Consular A gent Mon tague and Superintendent Kingdon, has been reported. A t La Grande, however, it was reported th a t th e dead highway man was identified as George Chap man by a prescription bottle filled at a La Grande drug store. D eputy Sheriff McDuffy is easily the hero of the hour. He not only killed the highwaymen, but he brought to a speedy end a tra in holdup which had been carefully planned and was being coolly executed. The season is now fa r enough ad vanced to m ake it alm ost certain th a t the cereal crops of the Pacific N orth w est will be safely gathered. The progress also is sufficient to enable grain men to estim ate w ith a degree of closeness the yields of the leading grains. T h at the w heat * crop of the three sta te s will break all previous records is conceded by nearly every grain au thority in the N orthw est. The gener al estim ate now is 65,000,000 bush els for Oregon, W ashington and Idaho. The crop in these s ta te s last y ear was alm ost 56,000,000 bushels. E arlier in the season grain dealers believed the N orthw est would produce 70,000,000 bushels of w heat, but it is thought they overestim ated th e crop, as is frequently done in seasons of g re at promise. Close w atch has been kept on the grow th and m aturing of the p lant in the leading w heat sections, and the exporters are satisfied th a t th e ir e sti m ates are nearly correct, and they are preparing to do business on these fig ures. H arvesting re tu rn s are beginning to come in from the early sections, and not only bear out the estim ates of the yield, but for the m ost p art point to an exceedingly good quality of grain. The barley crop of the N orthw est is also excellent and will, it is believed, fully equal the large outturn of la9t year. The oats crop is excellent, but in th e g rain trade the yield is not es tim ated up to last y e a r's total, as the acreage is some of the im portant oats d istric ts has been reduced. Opening prices have not been e stab lished definitely in any of the cereal lines. The w heat m arket has been unsettled by the downward course of values a t Chicago and Liverpool. The E astern and foreign m arkets were affected adversely by th e prom ise of a 900,000,000 bushels w heat crop in the U nited States, and in the N orthw est, this w eakness was reflected in the lower bids put out by dealers for late delivery. More than h a lf a million bushels, however, have been bought for early shipm ent and prices av erag ing about 80 cents a t tid e w a ter have been paid. As soon as the w orld's m arkets are adjusted to the new crop situation, an active buying m ovem ent can be e x pected in N orthw est te rrito ry . F ig uring roughly on the present and prob able prices, th e w heat crop o f the three sta te s should be w orth more than $42,000,000 to the farm ers. The b a r ley and oats crops should bring the total value of Pacific N orthw est cereals above $51,000,000. SECRET SERVICE! r»i i f i r Pacific Northwest Yield Will Reach 65 Million Bushels.
