NEWS OF THE WEEK Yaqui Indiana on raids have killed several Mexican fre ig h te rs in Arizona. T hree hundred and two persons were killed by autom obilej in New York C ity in 1913. Columbia county, Oregon, voted in favor of a good roads bond issue by 633 m ajority. General Villa, w ith 12,000 soldiers well arm ed and equipped, is ready to m arch on Torreon. Sentim ent in favor of Federal aid for good roads is said .to be growing rapidly in congress. A deputy facing a m urder charge ir. the M ichigan strik e zone has forfeited his bonds and dissappeared. Discover New Route for Alaskan Government Road W ashington, D. C.— Professor L aw rence M artin, of the U niversity of W isconsin, one of the g re a te s t living authorities on glaciers and glacial movements, in a comm unication ju st received by G ilbert H. Grosvenor, di rector of the N ational Geographic so ciety, su b sta n tia tes his claim to the discovery of a new railw ay route in A laska connecting Portage or Passage Bay, on the w est side o f Prince W il liam Sound, to T urnagain Arm. Although the United S ta te s geolog ical survey, in a bulletin m ade public Ja n u a ry 1, says th a t “ some excite m ent has been caused by the discovery of a feasible railw ay ro u te” connect ing the two points. Professor M artin points out th a t the discovery was made by the 1910 A laskan expedition o f the N ational G eographic society under his direction. “ We feel certain th a t, including the cost of the long tunnel, a railw ay only 11 or 12 m iles long and practically at sea level could have been built from Passage Canal to T urnagain Arm for much less than the $5,000,000 used in the construction of the 65 m iles of the A laska N orthern railw ay from Seward to JTurnagain A rm ,” says Professor M artin. “ This would have resulted in a m arked saving of grades, a sav ing of distance, and an elim ination of nearly all of the glacier com plications which still th rea te n the A laska N orth ern railw ay. ¿HAPTEN VI. Oregon Could Supply World With Platinum "Jo se p h in e county can furnish the w orld’s supply of platinum , unaided,” declared R. H. Bailey, a Portland m ining expert, recently. ‘ ‘She can produce more in one year, w ith devel- opm ent, than can be produced in the U ral Mountains of Russia, w here 90 per cent of the present w orld’s supply originates. Even w ith no effort made a t devel opm ent, Oregon already furnishes a m ateria! p a rt of the rem aining 10 per cent, and the g re a te r p a rt of O regon’s share comes from the placer m ines of Josephine county, w here it is saved as a by-product to gold.” The present annual platinum output of the world, according to Mr. Bailey, is about 300,000 ounces, valued a t about $15,000,000. Mr. Bailoy has sp en t five years studying the geology o f Josephine county, p articularly in its relation to the production of platinum , and he has found th a t it occurs in a form ation known as oliveine, and in character alm ost identical with the platinum - producing regions of the Ural Moun tains. He has an assay return from Baker & Co., of Newark, N. J ., known as the “ Am erican platinum tr u s t,” show ing th a t a sample of ore th a t he sent them contained 3 per cent of platinum and 94 per cent of osm o-iridium , a com bination of two very valuable m et als. This means th a t a ton of ore such as was assayed by B aker & Co. for Mr. Bailey, would contain 70 ounces of platinum and 2280 ounces of osm o-iridium . “ The gold found in the placers has come from the same form ations as the p latin u m ,” said Mr. Bailey. "T h irty m illions in gold have been taken from the creek where I have found plati- num, and y e t there have been no ledg- es found th a t have been developed, and th a t is w hat the e n tire Southern Oregon m ining country needs.
