GERMAN AIRSHIP IN FRANCE
Lost Dirigible Captured By Mili
tary Authorities.
Luneville, F rance—The Germ an m il
ita ry dirig ib le airship Zeppelin IV
made a landing in the m ilita ry parade
grounds here and was seized by the
French authorities. The incident has
caused trem endous excitem ent.
The Germ an officers aboard the a ir
ship explained th a t they had been lost
in the clouds and did not know they
had crossed the French frontier.
The in h ab itan ts of the eastern fron
tie r regions o f France have been much
ag itated the last few weeks over re
ports th a t Germ an dirigibles had been
observed or heard nightly hovering
over the forts. The stories, like those
o f the phantom airsh ip of England,
never w ere properly substantiated.
The chief officers o f the engineer
corps a t L uneville removed the m ag
netos from the engines in order th a t
the airship could not g e t under way,
and the cabin was searched fo r pho
tographic apparatus, sketches or sim-
ia r evidence of spying operations, but
nothing of th a t n atu re was found.

As we passed the shop at a walking

his assistan t were hoisting the bicycle

Fifty yards m ore and we drew up Dy

Peace kept the windows closed, so
th at I could not look back along the

1 could see th a t our driver was quietly
taking note of affairs. It was not the
first tim e th a t the Inspector had em
ployed him, as I learnt afterw ards,
and the man knew his business.
Suddenly our cab whisked round
and set off at a rapid pace. The stra n
ger had selected a fast horse, th a t
was evident. We swung through a
maze of narrow streets, tugged up a
long hill, skirted a stretch of open
common—a part of H am pstead Heath,

shade of some tall trees. As I got out
I saw the lights of the chaise statio n

“T here may be trouble, Mr. Phil

“I'm not certain I ought to bring you
along. If anything—’’
"N onsense!" I Interrupted, glancing
down at him with some am usem ent.
"W ell, tak e this, anyway. I had It
from a German burglar.”
He th ru st a strip of hardened rub

Inches In length by two In thickness.
“It will stun a man w ithout leaving

The four-wheeler th a t we had fol

the m oaning w retch who squirm ed on

“Now, Jack Steadm an, th at Is quite
enough," said the inspector, pushing
his way through the laurels.
"And who may you be?” cried the
other, with a furious oath.
"My nam e Is Addington Peace of tbe

for being concerned In the robbery of
a valuable diamond, tbe property of

"Stolen a diam ond!" he bellowed.
"Do you call th at a diam ond?”
He flung down a stone th a t sparkled

"1 am aw are th at It la the Im ita

not your fault th at you missed the
real thing. I have a cab waiting. You
bad b e tte r come with me quietly. And
I warn you, Steadm an, th a t anything
you say will be used In evidence
against you."
It was after two In the m orning be

of my rooms. I had m ade the fourth
of th a t odd cab load to the n earest
police station; for, though Mr. Jack
Steadm an had blustered, and the Hon.
George C arstalrs had groveled and
whined thither, they bad consented to
go a t last. And th e re I had left the
detective and his prisoners, driving to
my room s to aw ait bis return.
“T he case was not quite so difficult
as you suppose, Mr. Phillips," he
said, In answ er to ray question. "You
rem em ber th at I believed the diamond
to be still In the house?"
"C ertainly.”
"It would be hard to Imagine a more

It; It was also certain th a t I ought to
be able to hook them when they did.
Yet I very nearly lost the diamond,
a fte r all. Taubery, Gunton and the

the robbery, nothing had been moved
from the dining room, passage or li

was not locked, and we passed Into a
fair-sized garden, set about w ith flow

middle I could see the outline of a
square gray house. Two of the ground
floor rooms glowed behind th e ir cur
tains; the re st was darkness.
We crossed a corner of th e lawn,
and stopped behind a patch of bushes
directly In front of the entrance
porch. The night was very still and
silent. W hat desperate m en were
gathered In th a t quiet place? How
could we hope to a rre st them flushed
with tbe trium ph of so Bplendld a
prize? To be truthful, I began to feel
a certain anxiety for our position;
though upon Peace's face, showing
white In the gloom, was a look of per
fect serenity—a look th at I could not
understand.
"Mercy, oh, m ercy!”
It was a trem bling wall or terro r, a
wall th a t was suddenly blotted out by
a roar like the challenge of a bull.
From within the house came the crush
of overturned chairs and the Jingle of
breaking glass. And all the tim e the
shrieks and hoarse ravings drew near
e r and louder, until, with a loud bang,
the hall door was flung open and a
man tumbled down the steps as If

ant, In black silhouette again st the
