ent editor of The Progress will
have been in charge of the paper,
eleven months. Between now ami
Ireb. i, notices to those who liu veil':
paid for the year passing, will be
mailed and those who fail to pj> b\
Feb I. will be stricken from the
subsetiption list.
And for this
reason:
It may not be known to the sub
scribers, but there is a government
ruling which forbids any publisher
from sending a weekly paper to a
delinquent subscriber longer than
oue year at the second class mailing
rate.
The Ptogress, accordingly,
cannot take a chance on losing the
mailing privilege.
During the present vear the edi­
tor has striven to whip the subscrip
tion list into shape and the roll cull
now is composed of live folks, peo­
ple who say they like the paper and
will stay by it. The list has l>et a
nearly doubled and due apprecia­
tion is hereby acknowledged.
Besides, one “ dun" a year isn't
much is it, when you take into con­
sideration that practically every
other line of ¡business expects its
money at the expiration of 30 t«!6o
days? So be ready when The Pro
gress sends its notice to delinquents.

offices of the engineers. The road
taps the big forests heretofore lit­
tle utilized for rubber, because of
the stretch of waterfalls iu the M.r-

zon. His company also buvs and
exports rubber.
The stuff costs
about $2.50 a pound and the greas
er government! adds on a good
hunk as export duty, so it is little
wouder, although the rubber is
quite plentiful that it is high when
it reaches the U. S.
The climate is hot at Port V.il-
ejo and there is much fever and
other tropical disease, but Anttri
cajis are temperate, boil the water
and take care of themselves. The
pay is good and all entpU yes of the
company are allowed a vacation 011
full pay and expenses to their
homes in America, every year.
Mr. Powell will shoitly leave for
New York from whence he will
sail for Brazil. The trip to the in­
terior is made by steamer on tne
Amazon and Maderia.
