Prodded by Mrs. Sara Bates, school clerk, who on a recent visit learned, to her astonishment, that the district had only $432 in the treasury, a total of $3,938 has t>een found and turned back by the sheriff. The first item of $1,319 was a miscue by Sheriff Mass, who had turned it over to District 105. To Mrs. Bates, he explained, Monday, that the $2,619 still coming, was an error ot the county clerk’ s office, and it happened this way: 4 & On Tim e Deposits A g r e * . to P a y B u t C la im . $ 3 ,9 3 8 . R esu lt of M rs. Bates* W o rk . Mortgage Loans W h e re th e C le rk E rred. The clerk's office wrote down only a tenth of the taxes which the O R. L. & P. should have paid. The railroad company upon being notified of the miscue, a few days ago, agreed to pay what is due the county, but claims a discount of 3 per cent amounting to $328.27. It says it is not to blame tor clerical errors and the county accordingly allows the discount. The total amount the railroad should have paid, less the 3 per cent. is$2,947.37. Where Estacada district suffers bv reason of this error is that this money, which would have been used to take up outstanding war rants and thus saved tiie district some money in interets.
