With ideal weather, beautiful surroundings in the groves at the Country club in Upper Garfield and at George, county division speakers were inspired to do their best before the big crowds which greeted theta the early part of this week. Forty people from Estacada, Currinsville and surrounding points accompanied the speakers and the Cascade male quartet, picniced al Miller’ s bridge in the George district and thorough­ ly enjojed the day. Many bad never been in the George country. The pretty farm homes and build­ ings, highly cultivated farms tele­ phone lines, good roads- largely constructed by yolunteer labor— roused the visitors to great enthu­ siasm, It was a positive treat to those who had not realized the possibilities of that prosperous sect­ ion. Upper Garfield too is equally enjoyable both in improvements and in the class of citizens and there is no doubt that every person who made the trip is more than ever convinced that Cascade county is to be the wealthiest in the state. Its’ per capita wealth now, before divis­ ion, is more than $ 1,000. Fir«t Meeting in Garfield. The day began with a largely at­ tended meeting at the Country Club in Garfield. The visitors were met by G. T. Hunt and a committee of citizens and the speaking was con­ ducted from the bandstand. By request Chairman C. W. Devore of the Cascade executive committee, presided. The Cascade male quartet sang several songs during the meet­ ing and talks were made by L. E. Belfils, J. S. McCurdy and Chair­ man Devore, the latter using a huge map in illustrating the advantages of county division. R. M. Standish circulated petitions which were signed by every voter and folders, giving 85 reasons for division were distributed. Big Crowd at George. Through a beautiful country the visitors drove, after luncheon on Eagle Creek, and drew up at the grove near the school house in George. Adolph Miller, who later presided at the meeting, A. N. Jennsen and others had prepared an out door platform in the pretty grove, from which the speakers addressed a big crowd of men women and children. The quartet sang and and in addition to C. W. Devore, J. S. McCurdy and L. E. Belfils, R. M. Standish spoke brief­ ly. It has been reported that there was some opposition to the move­ ment at George, but after hearing the talks and discussing the matter openly, many who had been report­ ed averse to division, professed themselves satisfied and sigDed the petition. Only one person declined to sign and he only because he thought the division line should have included Gresham, which is located in Multnomah county. Both meetings were highly suc­ cessful. A meeting has been ar­ ranged for Eagle Creek at Elliott's hall, a week from Saturday night June 15. A dance will follow the meeting which will be finished early Music will be furnished by the Cas­ cade quartet and the Estacada or­ chestra.
