If Bast Clackamas county la good
enough for Oregon City to hang
onto with might and main, it is
strong enough to stand alone.
The crucial point in the presi
dential campaign has been reached.
The man who carries the Ohio pri
maries. next Tuesday, has the edge
on the republican nomination. Roth
Taft and Roosevelt are making tre
mendous efforts to carry the state.
Whenever you are figuring on
purchasing anything, give the Es
tacada merchants a chance to make
prices. You may find that you are
losing money by buying at Portland
or of some catalog house in the
east. At least ask; it costs nothing.
If any doubter as to the wisdom
of county division, would like to
ask a question regarding the matter,
• letter addressed to the campaign
committee or to The Progress, will
receive prompt attention,
It is
only by a fair discussion of the
subject that a decision may be
reached.
Brush Fires do Damage
in Estacada Country
Forest fires, the result of the dry-
weather and the high winds early
in the week did some damage in
the Garfield and Dodge districts
and caused much uneasiness. Linn's
mill, an old structure was burned
and a considerable number of shing
les. Two dwelling houses on Dr.
Charlton-Snyder’s ranch were burn
ed and two buildings on the old
Bush place In Dodge were consum
ed
The forest guards together with
volunteers did considerable fighting
and saved much property. A good
deal of fence on the Rawlings place
was burned.
Practically all fires
are now under control.
VIOLA
Will Miller and family were Viola vis
itors last Sunday, with their father and
mother and brothers and sisters. A very
enjoyable time was spent.
The Mills property will have new
owners in the near future if its owners
will trade it off to a gentleman who is
well pleased with the valley and prop
erty.
Viola was well supplied Sunday with
fishermen who came out from Portland
and Oregon City to enjoy the pleasant
day.
Rev. R. Smith the county school mis
sionary, was a Viols visitor last Friday,
when he visited many of the citizens,
who were pleased to see him once more.
Mr. Tibbits, a Portland man, was the
guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Randolph
lust Sunday.
A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. John
Mattoon Thursday night. John's laugh
may not be so loud or so jolly now as
this is the first time Mr. Stork lias visited
him.
A Sunday school program is now be
ing arrauged for “ Children's Day” the
17th of June. Many have volunteered
to help. A committee will be appointed
by Sunday School Superintendent John
Hamilton.
