Rescue— Engineer Says He Had
No O rd ers.
Omaha— Seven persons were killed
and 20 injured, four o f them serious
ly, in a collision between Missouri
Pacific passenger train No. 105, north
bound, en route for this city, and a
fast freight train.
The wreck, which occurred at Fort
Crook, ten miles south o f here, is be
lieved to have resulted from a misun
derstanding o f orders on the part o f
the freight crew.
A passenger train
due to leave this city for the South
about the time o f the accident was
converted into a relief train and sent
to the scene o f the accident, and later
returned here with the uninjured and
several o f those who were slightly in
jured. All o f these were sent on their
way. Those more seriously injured
are being cared for at the Army hos
pital at Fort Crook.
Governor Gilchrist, o f Florida, who
was a passenger on the northbound
train, was uninjured.
Passenger train No. 105, out of
Kansas Ctiy, in charge o f F. R. Tra
vers, conductor, was running late. L.
P. Gross, conductor o f the freight
passed South Omaha at 8:30. He had
“ signed o ff” but evidently did not
check the train register as to the
whereabouts o f No. 105.
A t the point o f collision the track
make a sharp curve, shutting oif the
view o f the Fort Crook station. It
was at this point that Engineer Craw
ford o f the freight sighted No. 105,
which was coming at high speed. En
gineer Crawford, it is said, had no
orders in regard to No. 105, but he
whistled and slackened speed. When
the passenger did not answer he con
cluded it was a train on the adjoining
Burlington tracks.
When within a few car lengths o f
each other, both engineers realized
the danger and reversed their engines.
The momentum o f the passenger train
however, was so great that in a mo
ment it was piled high upon the freight
engine, which had almost stopped.
The crews o f both engines jumped.
Dr. John Colliver, o f Los Angeles, a
passenger in the Pullman, rushed to
the front and worked heroically to as
sist the injured.
The crew and uninjured passengers
formed themselves into a band that
worked under the direction o f Dr. Col
liver until the arrival o f the Army
medical corps, from Fort Crook, under
Major Dale and Lieutenant Clark.
A call was sent to Omaha for medi
cal assistance
The engineer o f the
passenger declared he heard no whistle
from the freight train.
He said he
was not going over 25 or 30 miles.
Tripoli— Refore dawn Sunday morn
ing 200 Turkish infantrymen attacked
the intrenched advance posts o f the
Italians, west o f Boumeliane.
A fter an hour’ s fighting, the Italian
infantry, backed by field guns landed
from the fleet, forced the Turks to
beat a retreat, leaving one dead, a
quick firing gun with ammunition and
various supplies.
Four Italian soliders were wounded.
Constantinople— The Turkish parlia
ment was opened Saturday afternoon,
the Sultan’ s speech being read by the
grand vizier in the presence o f the
sultan, the oldest Turkish princes, the
foregin diplomats and the heads o f the
foreign banks.
The speech declared that Italy
opened hostilities before the expira
tion o f 24 hours after the ultimatum
was given and with firing upon tor
pedo boats in the Adriatic when they
were saluting, ignorant that hostili
ties had broken out.

Governor Wilson, in his Indianapolis

most emphatic the
point that the corporations have none
o f the rights o f private individuals
and must be treated solely as the pub

“ A modern joint stock corporation
cannot in any proper sense be said to
base its rights and powers upon the
principles o f private property. Its
powers arc wholly derived from legis

venience o f business at the sufferance
o f the public.
Its stock is widely
owned, passes from hand to hand,
brings multitudes o f men into its
shifting partnerships and connects it
with the interests and the investments
o f whole communities.
It is a seg
ment o f the public; bears no analogy

which private property is safeguarded

Not content with managing the
transportation, not satisfied with be-
n ' a landlord, the Isthmian Canal
commission has become a restaurant
keeper, waiter and cook.
Here is a statement o f the lenp'h to
which this heretical tendency has been
carried.
The cost o f running the messes for
“ gold,” European and negro employes
during the six months ending Decem
ber 31, 1909, was over $700,000, and
the rect ipts and expenditures practi
cally balanced.
It is an eloquent tribute to the gov
ernment’ s cuisine that 3,375 o f the 4,-
800 Eur>pean laborers- who are free
to eat where they w ill— prefer the
mess-halls to anything which “ indi
vidual
initiative”
has
to offer.
There are three “ club” messes run by
unmarried white men in opposition to
the commission hotels.
Perhaps a
hundred canal employes use them.
But in spite o f the large income from
the “ bar” these private messes are
more expensive and very little better
than the government's meals.
No private contractor in tl e world
feeds his employes as well as the Isth
mian Canal commission.
There are
very few o f the employes who ever
ate better meals, slept in cleaner,
more com fortable beds, or amused
themselves in more wholesome clubs
than those furnished by the govern
ment.— Success Magazine.
