Large Class Take Eighth Crater Lake National Park Many thousands of years ago among the majestic volcanoes of the Cascade Range towered one, perhaps the loftiest of them all, which has now disappeared, After the cataclysm which swallowed this huge mountain there remained, however, an enormous crater, > a caldera, which more than compen sates in interest for the loss of the I mountain. There are thousands of craters in the United States, but there is only one great caldera, and i that contains Crater Lake, truly lone of the w'onders of America. It i Crater Lake were situated in the bosom of the- Appalachians thous ands of people would visit it an nually, if it were an Alpine Crater many Americans would rave over it as the choicest gem of European scenery. As it is, although the Crater Lake region lias been a national park since 1902, the people who have visited it number only a few thousand. But an awakening is at hand; the railroad is building a line close to the park, the Gov ernment is planning roads and tra*is and within a short time it will be | the fault only of the people them selves if they fail to visit this wonderful region and receive im pressions never to he effaced from memory.—U. Mr, Richardson reports a great move ment has been started there to in duce Americans to see their own country before going to Europe. A big convention will be held there January 22-27 next to further this idea. “ Oregon should be deeply inter ested in this convention,’ ’ said Mr. Richardson. “ If O regon could se cure one per cent of the people of the congested cities of the East who should move, it would more than double the population of the state. The old East has no patriotism. The people talk about, travel in, and know only Europe and other far countries, and Eu ropean travel drains this country oi $400,000,000 every year.
