The Progress has heretofore called attention to the fact of the near approach of our general city election and suggested that the people get together and name men who will represent the majority of the voters as candidates to fill the various offices, that ( f mayor, treasurer, recorder and couucilmen. According to the amended chart er the mayor, treasurer, recorder and two councilmeu are to be elected for a term of two years and three councilmen for four years. We have the making of a good and thrifty city in Estacada if we con tinue to be aggressive and take ad vantage of our opportunities. Officials of the city have much to do with this success or failure. We need good broad minded officials that do not have personal ambitions but the public good at heart. We think we will be sustained by the voters in saying that these are the qualifying characteristic that should be possessed by our officials. We have no desire to dictate who they should be, but we are satisfied this matter should be attended to at once. We have no time to spare. As our efforts to have this done so far have not been successful, all agree it should be, but none will make the move to have it done. We take the liberty of calling the voters to a citizen’ s meeting at the City Hall on Monday evening next for the purpose of placing in nomi nation men to fill the offices for the coming term. See that men who will care for the city interests are nominated. A sane Fourth of July is promised for Portland. It is now the inten tion to make a quiet one, without the usual noisy features that are usually so prominent iu the obser vance of Independence Day, People of the city for the most part plan to spend the Fourth in the country and to enjoy picnics and outings in the fields and woods within reach of Portland.
