A t his bedside were his wife, his daughter K atherine, and four sonB, David, Richard, Stephen and Blaine, and the physicians. D eath was due to septicem ia or blood poisoning. He was conscious until w ithin half hour of death. In the early evening there were per siste n t rum ors in W ashington th at the S en ato r’s condition had become grave, and fears w ere expressed th a t he n ig h t not live through the night. The Elkins family, however, were hopeful to the last and to the numerous inquir ers who poured in a t the E lkins home encouraging responses were given. Though no funeral arrangem ents have been announced, it is probable th a t Mr. E lkins will be buried a t El kins, W. Vs. D uring the larger p art of his service in the senate Mr Elkina was chairm an of the im portant com m ittee on in te r sta te commerce. As head of this com m ittee he had charge of the Hepburn ra te regulation bill of 1907 and of the adm inistration bill of 1910. A ra il road builder and owner him self, Mr. Elkins had an in tim ate knowledge of all questions affected by this legisla tion. He was the outspoken champion of the bill of 1910 and, as such, fought for its passage night and day for months. Probably the longest speech ever delivered by the West V irginia senator was made in its support. Honeym oon Ship to Sail.
