carried off first prize at the Cana

won third prize in the sweepstakes
contest, despite the many exhibits
entered by Canadian apple growers
and those of Northwest states.
This showing is a splendid one and
indicates that Southern Oregon
fruit will offer keen competition at
Spokane, as well as at the Portland

the precinct vote between the

Annexation Fails
The vote on annexing part of
this county to Multnomah was also
a surprise for this district. We
said, when the agitation was first
started, that we believed it was not
a good change and gave our reasons
for it. The few of us who thought
that way at that time seemed so
much in the minority that we
simply kept quiet about’our views
aud did not try to force them on a
community that at least seemed to
be favorable to annexation, par
ticularly the country districts.
Our local vote did not justify that
conclusion however, As the voters
became more familiar with the pro
position aud knowing that Portland
people were working for its defeat,
the people did not approve of mak
ing the change, The vote was
about equal for and against in this
locality.
