Medford—Shippers believe th a t the
coming season will be the banner fru it
year for the Rogue R iver valley.
The apple, pear and peach crop is
very heavy. I t is estim ated th a t the
Medford d istric t will ship from 400 to
600 cars of apples and 100 to 300 cars
o f pears. Moat of the peaches will go
by express. The several apricot or
chards in the valley have not a very
good crop this year.
However, about
1,500 crates will be shipped.
The
apricot harvest has begun.
Most of
the shipm ents are going to Portland.
The pear harvest will open with

10. During the two or three weeks of
the B a rtle tt pear harvest from 10 to
15 cars will be shipped from Medford
daily. A fter the B artletts, the How
ells, d ’Anjou, Comice and W inter Nel
lis will come in quick succession.
From 150 to 200 packers will be en
gaged in the pear and apple harvest
in the Rogue R iver valley this season.
Besides the packers, several hundred
men will be kept busy in the orchards

two young men, no new cases have de
veloped w ithin the past few days.

bert, who is still in a serious condition,
may not recover.

lieved to have passed the crisis and may
live. The disease, which has really
reached the epidem ic stage, is still
puzzling the doctors of the community.
I t seems to be an acute inflammation
of the spinal cord, and causes intense
suffering to the victims.

New Mill Begins C utting Logs.
Bandon — The new mill of the
George W. Moore Lum ber company,
recently completed, is one of the best
plants of the kind on the coasL It
w as form erly known as the Cody mill
and was burned in August, 1909.
It
is owned by the George W. Moore
Lum ber company. The Cody Lumber
company does the logging end of the
business.
The m achinery is all first class and
several of the devices are of the spe
cial design of Mr. Logan.
Among
these is an arrangem ent for the so rt
ing table which effects g re a t economy
of labor. The mill has a first class
steam plant equipped differently from
any mill on the Coast. The mill s ta r t
ed cutting 80,000 feet of lum ber a
day. The full capacity w ill be 125,000
feet. The mill and the logging camp
together m ake a big item in the pay
roll of Bandon. The steam schooners
Fifield and Bandon are engaged in car

Toledo—The board of directors of

packed and shipped apples for a num
ber of years, was engaged as business
m anager for the union. He w ill have
full charge of the grading, packing and
shipping and selling of the en tire crop.

tion will ship betw een 25 and 50 cars
of choice apples. This is the first year
th a t i he union has attem pted to m ar
k e t the crops of its mem bers, and the

ex-President Roosevelt Saturday, July
16. They were Giles B. Jackson, of
Richmond, Va., John Dany, of Salis
bury, N. C., Dr. Wm. D. Crum, of
Charleston, S C., and H arry S. Cum
m ings, of Baltimore. The visitors re
quested Mr. Roosevelt to speak a t the
negro sta te fa ir in V irginia in October
on his views of the conditions in A f
rica. A fter a half hour's talk w ith
Mr. Roosevelt the negroes returned to
New York. Each of them held a chip
as a souvenir.

er of a plebian place in the food
scheme, is destined to become a com
prehensive m edicative and remedial
elem ent th a t will put all others in the
shade, according to Dr. M arian N.
Clark, who announces the discovery of
rem arkable curative properties in the
plant and blossoms.
Her idea, already carried out on a
small scale and suggested by the men
thol industry, is to electrolyze the al
fa lfa and condense its healing ele
m ents to vest pocket size -a haystack
of m edicine in a tablet.
Dr. Clark pridefully recounts many
instances of curing w ith the condensed
a lfa lfa juice many nervous ailm ents,
from delirium trem ens to “ th a t tired
fe elin g .”
One of these was the aggravated
case of a Reno sport, who bet on Jeff
ries and drowned his sorrows in so
many tall ones th a t the cobras came to
g e t him. .The condensed hay expert
beat ’em to it and cured the victim so
effectively th a t now he shudders a t the
sig h t of even a dog, if the dog is a
grow ler.

shown th a t the governm ent does not
care for convictions unless those g a th e r
ed in the n et are the men “ higher u p ”

The mock “ bombs” were dropped
from a Height of about 300 fe e t and
Curtiss purposely failed to strik e the
deck of the yacht for fe a r of in juring
the officials and passengers on her
decks.
E xperts agreed th a t the experim ents
ahowed th a t a fleet of aeroplanes armed
w ith bomba could wreck any w arship
before guns could be trained on them.
C urtiss was flying about 45 m iles an
hour when he dropped the “ bom bs”
and officials on the deck declared th a t
he was w ithin accurate distance of
rifle fire less than half a m inute. Col
onel W illiam Allen Jones, retired,
form erly of the United S tates Engin
eer corps, who is an advocate of aero
planes for coast defense, stated a fte r
the tria ls his belief th a t the a ir m a
chine has proved its efficacy.
“ The arm ored battleship is ap
proaching its last days as an engine of
attack ag ain st a city or country guard
ed by aeroplanes,” he said.
“ I believe a fleet of a score of air
machines would absolutely protect any
ro ast city. A nig h t flight by such a
fleet not only would probably demolish
an en tire fleet of battleships, but would
so dem oralize the crew of the attacked
vessels as to m ake them useless.”
C urtiss also dropped oranges over a
fortification marked out on the beach,
m aking practically every shot a “ h it,”
although the trajectory was som etim es
as g re at as 30 degrees, because of the
wind and his speed.
W alter Brookins’ flight here was
sensational, the adept driver gliding
his m achine toward the ocean until its
runners w ere subm erged in a breaker.
He arose safely and glided to the
beach.

The report is
w ritten by Byron H unter and S. O.
Jayne, experts sent out by the d ep art
m ent to study the soil, clim ate, crops
and m ethods of irrig atio n .
Embodied in this pam phlet is a vast
am ount of good advice and tim ely sug
gestions; cautions as to the best m eth
ods to proceed, the m anner of selecting
best adapted crops, and pointers as to
how to g e t the best results under the
conditions peculiar to th is region. The
pam phlet, known as Bureau of P lant
Industry circular No. 60, is to be had
upon application to the departm ent, or
through senators and representatives.

Bournemouth, England—In full view
of thousands of persons, Hon. Charles
S. Rolls, the daring young aviator,
whose fe a t of flying across the English
channel and back recently thrilled E ng
land, fell 100 feet to his death when
the tailpiece of his W right biplane
suddenly snapped off, causing the ma
chine to plunge w ith terrific speed to
the ground.
The tragedy could not have been
more dram atic.
The wrecked aero
plane struck the earth directly in front
of the grandstand.
Rolls was dead
before the doctors could reach his side.
W rapped about by the tw isted and
tangled w reckage of the broken a ir
ship, it was several m inutes before his
m angled body could be ex tricated from
the mass. The doctors found th a t he
had sustained a fractured skull.
If the fa llin g plane had struck a few
feet more to the side, i t would have
crashed directly into the grandstand.

Redding—Fred W. Andree, conduc
tor, was killed, C harles J . Foley,

and 12 fre ig h t cars were derailed in a
wreck on the Southern Pacific railroad
a m ile south of Gibson.
A broken
flange on one of two cars which were
being pushed ahead of the locomotive
caused a derailm ent of the first car and
the engine and 11 rem aining cars rap
idly le ft the rails. The wreck occurred
in a deep cut, and when the engine and
cars piled upon one another traffic from
both sides was blocked.

P ittsb u rg —A powder m agazine a t
Cabot, P a., exploded here killing one
person gnd injuring 20 others. The
m agazine was the property of the
Standard P la te Glass company, and
contained 1,000 pounds of dynam ite
and 5,000 pounds of blasting powder.
The man killed had gone to the m aga
zine to g e t powder for quarries.
Shortly a fte r he was seen to en ter, the
explosion occurred and he was blown to
fragm ents, leaving no clew ss to how
the powder became ignited.

Sedalia, Mo.—Several persons were
