FR E E . SPOHN MEDICAL CO., MEDICAL Û A / TME Ooshan, I n d l i n i J ^ ---- Colorado Coal Mine Scene of Death Ocnists and Bacteriologists, GOSHEN, IND, Ü. S. A. P rim ero,. Colo., Feb. 1 . - Seventy- nine bodies of the victim s of yesterday afternoon’s explosion in the Prim ero mine were found piled in a mass a t the foot of the a ir sh aft shortly a fte r mid night. When the explosion occurred the men evidently made a rush to escape through the a ir shaft, and were suffo cated as they battled w ith one another for freedom . I t has been shown by the tim e k eeper’s records th a t there were 148 men in the mine a t the tim e of the ex plosion. Few are thought to be alive. The m ain sh a ft of the m ine is com- dletely wrecked. The m ine a uthorities telegraphed an order to Denver early th is morning for 80 coflins. One man only has been found alive. He ia badly injured and has not been identified. The explosion occurred in the mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron company a t 4 :30 o ’clock yesterday afternoon. Three men a t the mouth of the mine were killed by the force of the concus sion. Both fans w ith which the mine was equipped were sh attered , but were re placed and J . H. Thompson, superin tendent, and a rescue party entered by the main a :r shaft, hut were unable to reach the main shaft,w hich was com pletely blocked. The p arty returned to tha surface a fte r securing five bodies, which w ere badly burned. A party equipped w ith oxygen hel metg replaced them and continued the search for more bodies. Miners were rushed, to Prim ero from Trinidad, Saundo, S tarkville, Sopris and Coke- ville, and labored frantically to clear the m ain sh a ft, relieving each other every few m inutes. Most of the victim s are Slavs and H ungarians, although Electrician Will Helm is among the m issing. The cam p w h s a scene of indescrib able horror last night. While every ahlebodied man was tak in g his turn w ith pick and Bhovel to clear the shaft, the women and children, kept back by ropes, gathered about the shaft, weep ing and calling loudly open their loved ones who had not been found. M embers of the rescue p arty say th a t the effect of the explosion under ground is indescribable. The bodies recovered were horribly burned and unrecognizable. One body was im paled on broken tim bers. P A R IS R E C O V E R S . O b r d te n c e . Parie, Feb. 1.—Im provem ent in the general situation continues and the sp irits of the P arisians are rising as the w aters fall. S tre e t haw kers are selling postcard pictures of the flood and the boulevards are once more gay w ith thousands. W ith the crisis past, the m ercurial French tem peram ent faces the subsid iary troubles w ith a light heart, but the papers already are w arning the people th a t m easures m ust be taken to avoid a repetition of the disaster. The p refect of the d> p artm ent of the Seine has issued instructions to the owners of flooded houses to clean and d isinfect th e ir premises to the sa tis faction of the municipal architects w ithin 24 hours a fte r the subsidence of the w aters. The governm ent has ordered the tax collectors to show the g re a te st len iency to delinquents, and the Mont de Pieto is extending pawn tick ets for three months. Public and private benevolence continues to respond to the call of the sufferers. T heaters and societies are organizing benefits, while the various race courses are arranging a big m eeting for the spring, the receipts of which will go to the poor. A resolu tion has been introduced in the cham her of deputies asking the governm ent to aw ard special crosses of the Legion of Honor to those who have been con spicuous in the rescue work. Although the papers a re p rinting columns of pitiful stories, a hundredth p a rt o f the horror never will be known. Many corpses have been sw ept down river, and occasionally a corpse is found in a boat, broken away from some funeral procession. “H a ro ld ,” p e re m p to rily s p o k e th e s te r n fa th e r, "y o u a r e s p e n d in g a good d e a l o f m o n e y on booze a n d to b a c c o .” "Y es. s ir.” “A n d y ou look d is r e p u ta b le .” "Y es. s ir." W ashington, Ja n . 31.—The president has determ ined to press to a conclusion the pending su it against the Union and Southern Pacific Railroad companies, looking to a dissolution of the merger, and today concluded to deny the appli cation of Mr. Lovett, H a rrim a n ’a suc cessor, for a dism issal of the suit. Soon a fte r Judge L ovett and a num ber of influential railroad people ap pealed to the president to squash pro ceedings before Judge Vandeventer’s court in Salt Lake C ity., Mr T aft, following the course th a t had been- adopteci in the case of the fam ous New York, New Haven & H artford Railroad company, when a sim ilar appeal was made, referred the m atter to the a t torney general for exam ination. In the New England case, it was found th a t, because of action taken by the sta te of M assachusetts and th e insig nificance of the governm ent's interests, it would be best to abandon the prose cution of the railroad, and this was done. But A ttorney General W ickersham reached a different conclusion in the Pacific railroad m erger case, and today he handed to President T a ft a volumin ous report, conclusions of which ju s ti fied the president in the announcement th a t there was a good case ag ain st the railroads, following the decision in the N orthern S ecurities litig atio n . There fore, proceedings a t S a lt Lake City will be pressed. The sta tu s of the c»«e a t present is th is : The governm ent has p u t in its testim ony. Then the case will go to th a t novel tri bunal of four judges provided by the anti tru s t act, known as the expediting court, and doubtless in the end it will come before the Suprem e court of the U nited S tates.
