London Mob Condemns Alfonso and
Blames King Edward.
Loiulou, Oct. 18.—The red Hag was
raised iu Loudon this afternoon and
a large mob moved upon the Spanish
embassay to make a dem onstration of
its disapproval of the execution of Pro
lessor Francisco Ferrer at Barcelona.
Police drove off the crowds in their
usual bloodless effectual way. But un
easiness pervaded the neighborhood.
The trouble began at a mass meeting
in T rafalgar square organized by sev
eral socialists and labor bodies. Sev
eral hundred members of these organi
zations marched to the square carrying
red Hags draped with crepe and bearing
inscriptions denouncing K ing Alfonso.
A black bordered banner was left stand
ing against the Nelson column with big
letters, “ To Hell W ith the M urderer
Alfonso."
Several laborite members of parlia
meut spoke. Victor Grayson, of Man
Chester, the socialist member, capped
the climax by declaring th at if the head
of every king of Europe were toru from
his body, it would not pay half the price
of F e rrer’s life.
He called the Russian emperor a
“ dirty m onster," and said King E d
ward, who could have prevented the
execution, was responsible for what
might happen iu England ns a result
of it. He demanded the expulsion of
the Spanish m inister.
The socialist societies, carrying ban
ners, then marched to the Spanish em
bassy, singing revolutionary songs and
hooting King Alfonso. A rabble ac
companied them, filling the streets. It
was dark when they reached the open
square in front of the embassy, and
they found the square filled with police.
The embassy window’s were dark and
tnere was no sign of life. The police
would not let the procession enter the
square, nor even stop.
The crowds turned back and kept
moving up Victoria street, toward the
Parliam ent buildings, singing, shouting
and groaning. The reserves drove the
mob into the side streets, dispersing it
without trouble.

ism last Sunday night, M inister Wu
Ting Fang, the best educated Chinaman
in the world, returned to tho “ medi
u m s" last night for a full bite. He
left the “ sean ce" chock full of infer
matiou from the spirit worli\, for
through the “ m edium " he is supposed
to have consulted the spirts of the late
Fresideut M cKinley and his own dead
mother. And the latter talked in real
Chinese language.
M inister Wu doesn’t say he is a con
vert to spiritualism . In fact, he tries
to avoid the subject entirely while talk
ing with newspaper nieu. He admits,
however, that he is interested, and that
he may attend other “ seances" before
retiring from his post in the near fu
ture.
H is first experience occurred last
Sunday night at a public meeting,
where anonymous Chinese spirits were
described to Dr. Wu by a “ trance
m edium ," as hovering in the distin
guished diplom at’s immediate vicinity.
Dr. Wu exhibited great interest.
L ast night he went again, this time
to a smaller seance at a private house
Dr. Wu refused last night to discuss
his experience or impressions, and even
showed solicitude lest his presence at
tho seance should be the subject of
newspaper mention. The woman me
dium who officiated—a different one
this time— brought to him messages
purporting to come from the late Presi
«lent McKinley, who was an intim ate
friend of Dr. Wu. and also from the
m inister’s own mother. Th'- ¿atter was
the more startling because, apparently,
delivered in the Chinese .1 guage.
These messages are claimed by the
spiritualists to be brought to the me
dium in trance by the spirit of a 16-
year-old American Indian girl, under
whose “ c o n tro l" she speaks in broken
English; yet the conversation between
Dr. Wu and the medium, w hjc osten
sibly under this “ control," was some
what extensive, lasting fully five min
utes, and seemed to be in the Chinese
vernacular, question and answer, unin
telligible to the auditors, passing back
and forth with considerable freedom.
There was every evidence th at the dip
lomat perfectly understood the commu
nication which apparently appeared to
come from the spirit of Di. W u’s own
mother. It was asserted that the
medium and her “ c o n tro l" are both
absolutely ignorant of the Chinese lan
guage.
