Ottawa, Sept. 21.— An official stat

has just been issued by the government
It givfs estimates of production, com
puted from reports of a large staff of
correspondents, and although totals are
somewhat less thau those of a mouth

show that Canada has reaped an im
mense harvest.
The wheat crop is put down at 168,
386,000 bushels, giving an average of 2!
bushels an acre, and barley at 57,000,
000 bushels, or 31 bushels jfti acre. Tin
yield of oats is 355,000,000, or 38 bush

One thing is assured, that the Cana

profitable grain crop the country ev^

they will have an enormous sum added
to their spending powers. It is esti

President Beams His Wav Into Favor
With Chicagoans.
Chicago, Sept. 17.— President T aft
smiled his way into the hearts of 500,
000 Chicagoans yesterday. Geniality
and “ B ill” T a ft— for that’s what the
multitudes called him— ruled the city
for 15 hours. From the moment he ar
rived until he entered his private car
to leave, through ail the automobiling

excitement, there was one thing which
shone as brightly as the sun o f a per
fect day.
It was the famous smile.
That smile was commented upon every
where. It was cheered and it made
those who saw it feel more pleased
with the world and with themselves.
Good humor, jollity, happiness— these
followed Mr. T aft like attendant guard
ians wherever he went.
And in response to that smile Mr.
T aft got the smiles and laughter of the
throngs, as well as their shouts and ap
plause.
All the way through the 16
miles of streets which he traveled dur
ing the day in a motor, at the West
Side hall park, at the Orchestra Hall
meeting, at the bankers' ball, Mr. T aft
saw thousands upon thousands of faces
which smiled at him and which cheered
him.
“ I t ’s grand,” said the chief execu
tive before he had been in the city five
minutes. “ I ’ m really vastly glad to
be here.”
As his automobile swept down Mich
igan avenue in the midst o f 150,000
school children, he turned to his aide-
de camp, Captain Archibald W. Butt,
U. S. A., and his voice was just an
atom husky.
“ This is wonderful, Butt,” he said.
“ The cheering of the children is most
pleasant to me, and yet affecting, for
we know that the cheering of the child
ren is sincere.”
A t the great bankers' ball there
were silks and white shoulders and
jewels; there was rythm of waltz mu
sic and glow of pendant 1’ghta; there
was dancing by blushing debutantes
and epigramatic foreign consuls; there
was promenading by prominent bank
ers and dowagers and beauties and pol
iticians.
And the chief individual fig
ure of the scene was the big man in
evening dress who smiled and smiled

This was the
subject o f his main ppeech today, and
in plain terms he upheld organization,
but demanded that the rights of non
