ern sold a week ago a t $1.45. S a tu r

men, exclusive of th e ship corps, which

of grasshoppers has caused thousands of
d o lla rs ’ dam age in the neighborhood of
Cowley. F arm ers have been compelled

All green stuff has been eaten. Around
Cheyenne p ra c tic a lly all vegetation has
been destroyed.

15 (v ia H am m erfest, Aug. 23).— W alter
W ellman 's second a tte m p t to sail over
the N o rth P ole in a balloon has resulted
in a failu re. T he g ia u t d irig ib le bal
loon “ A m e ric a ,” iu w hich M r. W ell­
man and his p a rty of three set out,
proceeded ab o u t 32 miles from th e
sta rtin g point, when d isa ster overtook
it.
A fte r a long p rep aratio n and w a it­
ing fo r fav o ra b le w eather, th e oppor­
tu n ity cam e today, and Mr. W ellman
decided to m ake the s ta rt. I t was 10
o ’clock in th e m orning when th e g re a t
airsh ip w as b ro u g h t out of its shed and
the d a riu g explorers took th e ir places
iu the car.
W hen th e anchors w ere ca st loose,
the airsh ip ascended b e a u tifu lly , the e n ­
gines were se t in m otion an d ev ery th in g
seem ed to w ork to perfection. The big
a ir c r a f t w as m auuvered fo r some tim e
and answ ered th e helm perfe ctly .
T hen its head w as tu rn ed northw ard,
and it se t o ut a t a speed of 25 miles an
hour. Suddonly, a f te r having' covered
32 m iles, and w hen e v e ry th in g seemed
to be going splendidly, th e le a th e r guide
rope, to w hich w as a tta c h e d 1000
pounds of provisions an d stores, broke
aw ay. T he accid en t occurred ju s t as
the airsh ip w as n earing th e p ack ice of
N orth S pitzenbergeu.
R eleased from th is g re a t w eight, tho
airsh ip shot upw ards a t a terrific pace,
u n til it w as a g re a t heig h t above the
clouds. T he pilots succeeded, however,
in b rin g in g her down n ear th e earth,
tu rn in g her a b o u t and set out to fight
th e ir w ay southw ard a g a in s t a strong
wind.
The airsh ip proceeded slow ly south­
w ard to th e edge of the pack ice, where
the steam er F ra m w as anchored. A fter
much difficulty, a tow rope w as gotten
ab o ard th e F ra m , w hich s ta rte d imme­
d iately to tow th e airsh ip to Spitzen-
bergen.
The stra in w as so g reat, however,
th a t it th re a te n e d to te a r th e car to
w hich th e rope w as atta c h e d to pieces,
an d Mr. W ellm an finally decided to
bring th e a irsh ip down to th e su rface
of the w ater. T his w as effected w ith ­
out m ishap an d th e ca r rested on the
su rface o f th e w a te r u n til all th e mem­
bers of th e crew , tho dogs and th e sci­
entific in stru m en ts could be tra n sfe rre d
ab o ard th e F ram .
The A m erica w as th en tow ed back to
th e lan d in g stage, aud writh in a short
d istan ce o f w here th e s ta r t w as made.
B u t tho ill-luck of th e expedition was
not y e t a t an end. J u s t as th e airship
had reached th e lan d in g sta g e and ev­
e ry th in g looked fav o ra b le fo r its rescue
w ithout serious dam age, a sudden gust
of w ind cau g h t tho big bag broadside
on, and sn a tch ed it aw ay from its tow
lines.
I t w as c arrie d careening over rough
ice hum m ocks fo r some d istan ce and
then i t exploded. All th e sc attered
p a rts of th e airsh ip w ere subsequently
recovered, b u t th e dam age w as so g reat
as to preclude an y f u rth e r a tte m p t to
fly over th e pole th is year.
