K ansas City, Ju ly 27.—Six lives
were lost and 36 persons were injured
three perhaps fatally, in the wreck of
W abash passenger train No. 4. when
it plunged into the Missouri riv er 30
m iles east of here.
The strain left Kansas City a t 9
o’clock Saturday night, and was due in
St. Louis ten hours later. O f the eight
cars th a t made up the train, five and
the engine are now in the river w ith
the w ater covering all of them except
one end of the lies Moines sleeper.

baggage car, a day coach and a sleeper
followed the engine into the stream .

Pendleton— A rticles of incorporation
have been filed for the F a rm ers’ R ail
way & N avigation company, which
proposes to build and operate an elec
trical railroad system in U m atilla
county. The first unit will be a road
between the towns of U m atilla, on the
Columbia, and Milton, in the h e art of
the fru it and g rain belt of the e ast end
of the county.
The company behind
the scheme is incorporated for $250,-
000, and it is announced th a t surveyors
are already in the field prep ired to lo
cate the rig h t of way.
The county
court has also been asked for franchises
over ce. tain roads of the county. This
organization is the result of electric
road construction by the F a rm ers’ un
ions of the county. A com m ittee has
been in v estigating the m atter for sever
al weeks. One of the men understood
to be behind the developm ent scheme
is Dr. W. R. Campbell, one of the
prom inent w heat growers c f the coun
ty, and sta te organizer for the F arm
e rs’ union. The incorporators of the

stock of the F a rm ers’ Railroad & Nav
igation company is divided into 2,500
shares of $100 each.

the main line of electric road from the
Columbia to the center of the w heat
belt, articles of incorjioration also per
m it branch lines, the m aintenance of
a fleet of steam ers on the Columbia,
and construction of telegraph and tele
phone lines. T his railroad project will
be in com petition w ith one for which
articles of incoproration w here filed a
week ago by Dr. C. J . Sm ith, A. R.
T urner and Douglas Belts, and which
proposes to construct a netw ork of elec
tric roads throughout U m atilla county,
beginning a t P ilot Rock and passing
through the new irrigation districts.

sults From E xperim ents.
O n ta rio - W heat on the dry farm s
near O ntario is in excellent condition
this year and is expected to m ake a
record crop. While Malheur county
farm ers do not give much a ttention to
w heatgrow ing as a general crop, nearly
every farm er has a small field, and the
p a it few years dry farm ing has come
mure and more into favor on the
beiches, where w heat is one of the
good crops.
T his y ta r the w heat is full, healthy
and clean. Most of it will average, it
is estim ated, from 36 to 40 bushels to
the acre, and the grain stands four to
five fe e t high. On fields which have
been cultivated for the first tim e this
year it is not quite so thick as on older
fields, but the entire average is good.

near O ntario this year than ever be
fore.

000. The crop is an exceptionally
good one, and will bring the highest

Salem —County Judge Bushey and
Commissioner Beckwith have returned
from Stayton, where they held a con
ference w ith County Judge Duncan, of
Linn county, in regard to the capers of
the Santiam river near Stayton, which
is causing some trouble by leaving its
form er course and going around the big
bridge owned jointly by Marion and
Linn :ounties. It was decided th a t
Marion county should build a w ing
dam perhaps 260 feet long to force
the riv er back into its course under
the bridge.

D ufur. -H arvest is now in full blast
here and the yield both in quality and
quantity is much b e tte r than was ex
pected. U ntil a week or so ago there
had been no rain here since the middle
of February. The yield of both w heat
and barley will be better than an aver
age crop. The good yield is a ttrib u te d
to the fact th a t there have been no hot
winds to dry the ground and the
w eather has been rem arkably cool and

Bros., railroad contractors, who are
supposed to be working fur the Hill
railways, wended its way to the south-

Indications are alm ost conclusive
th a t Porter Bros., intend to establish
not two, but five or six camps, as if
preparing to cover the entire ground of
the Oregon T runk line surveys. They
them selves did not know, was the re
ply given by representatives of the
Oregon T runk to inquiries as to the
num ber of cam ps and places of location.
Every indication is th a t men and
equipm ent were secured hastily, and it
is believed here to be tru e th a t the
contractors only know in a general way
where the cam ps will be established.

for a new treaty be begun a t once, not
w ithstanding the fa ct th a t the p re stn t
tre a ty does not expire for two years.
Our trade interests in Japan, however,
are not suffering and for this and other
reasons this governm ent did not see its
way clear to discuss the questions in
volved before the expiration of our
tre a ty in 1911.
U nder the most favored nation clause
of the treaty , Japan extends to the
U nited S ta te s all the conventional
ra te s which it has granted to G reat
B ritain, Germ any and France. On the
o ther hand, none of the reduced ra te s
authorized in section 3 of the Dingley
act, which were granted by the U nited
S ta te s to certain foreign countries, are
extended to Japan.

Croix arrived from Nome today w ith
$500,000 in gold dust and bars.

the way down the St. Croix stopped a t
Cordova and the passengers were taken
up the Copper river on a special train
40 m iles, to the camp w here a $3,000,-
000 cantilever bridge is under construc
tion across the river. The structure is
1,550 fe e t long and will be completed
in a year and a half. The bridge cross
es the riv e r betw een two large glaciers,
the Miles and Childs, the la tte r having
an imm ense river frontage.

afternoon w ith Angleton, a town of
2,000 people on the G ulf coast south
of Galveston, Angleton reported th a t
nearly every house in the town had

towns of Rosenberg, Randnn and E ast
Bernard suffered.

the gale caused record-breaking tides

ple were killed and injured in stre e t
traffic accidents during 1908 in Paris.
Though the ex act figures cannot be
given today for the first h alf of 1909,
the prefect of police declares they will
vastly exceed those of the preceding*
year. O f the total, 8,800 accidents
were due to autom obiles; cabs and oth
e r vehicles, 45,688; bicycles, 3,289;
tram w ays, 5,417.
Carelessness, the
prefect said, was the principal cause
o f accidents. Pedestrians crossing in
front of autos were in the m ajority.
