Thursday, Dtcembtr 24 . 1908
Christmas, Ihe seasou of C.ixxl
.Cheer is upon us again. While cer
tain forces, mostly from the money
making stand point, have been de
manding radical changes in its ob
servance, especially jn .the larger
cities, such as the doing away with
Christmas trees, on account of the
destruction it is to growing timber.
Removing the soft, bright shades
of light among the glittering tinsel
and green shade of the foliage pro
duced by the little sperm candle,
that so much annoys the insurance
monopolies. Cutting off the long
venerable gray hairs from Santa
Clause's whiskers to render your
fire policy more secure. In spite of
this onslaught against cur Christ
mas customs by the get-the-mouey
side of our nature; if we will but
consult the boy and girl of to-day
as to the pleasure of these customs
we imagine we will find the same
curious desire to find out what the
mysterious packages that come
round contain, as well as the same
restless can’ t-sleep-late-of-a-Christ-
mas morn, that once possessed we
hoys and girls of yesterday. Yes,
let good cheer prevail, we are will
ing that it remain a deceptive Kris-
kingle, whiskers and all.
It (s often said that printers take
the advantage of persons not wish
ing to subscribe to a paper by »elid
ing it after subscription has run out.
Others if you stop their paper the
issue it runs out want to know if
we cannot trust them for a few
cents. In this matter we will de
fine our position......Subscriptions
to flu jiaper are in advance, if, how
ever, %t.\he end of your subscrip
tion you refeive the paper, it is
with the understanding that at a
convenient time you will call and
pay for the same. If you wish
your paper stopped at expiration
of subscription, by advising us of
this, we have a way ot our own of
marking Such subscriptions and
they will lie stopped. All papers
marked "Sam ple Copy” we give
you. It is not our iuttution that
they be paid for. We are anxious
to place a copy of the P rogress in
every home in Eastern Clackamas
Co. Suppose you do get a daily
or a county paper, we have no ob
jection to that and think if you
wuut to be informed and up-to-date
you should.
The P r o g r e s s is
your home paper. It tells of your
home doings and is close to you iu
tlie family circle. Send in your
name and subscription.
Fifty school children from Chi
cago are to be brought to the A las
ka-Yukon-Pacific Exposition next
y.ar if the plan suggested by Sec.
Tom Richardson of the Oregon De-
vlopment League is carried out.
They will also visit Portland and
other cities iu this state and when
they return home will write letters
telling of the trip and what they
saw in the Northwest. Exhibits
ot the woods of this section, with
iudustrial and scenic pictures, have
been used in the Chicago schools,
m ide up into sets and circulated
iroin one school to another, in the
teaching of geography.
The Northwest Electric Eight &
Power Association, embracing Ore
gon. Washington. Idaho, and Mon
tana, held a two days' session in
t le Convention Hall of the Port
ia id Commercial Club last week.
Eve y state had numerous dele
gates and the meeting was oue of
the Inst they have ever held. The
Northwest has attracted the bright
est tueu from the technical schools
ot the country.
C. A. Kitine. Secretary of the El
P. *>. Texas, Chamber of Com
merce, is making a tour of the Coast
and is spending considerable time in
Oregon communities studying the'
publicity methods of the various
commercial bodies.
Mr. Kinne's
organisation is building a $50,1x10
building of its own, and is deter
mined that the work it undertakes
shall lie effective.

a good wagon road to the mines.
The present company was organ

stock issue is held by Mr. John
Brown, his brother, George, who is
a practical mining man, and W. L.
Bcckner, a mining expert; Presi

that the’ talc is a valuable product
as it is used for school chalk and by

Brown_is well and favorably known
by many of the residents through
