If the conference of Pacific Coa.-t
commercial bodies held in San
Francisco the past week had result
ed in nothing more than its action
regarding national conventions, the
meeting would have been one of the
most in portant, viewed from tlie
standpoint of the development of
Oregon, Washington and their sis
ter states, ever called. It was unan -1
imously agreed by the delegates j
in attendance that the Coast should
act as a unit in working to secure
such conventions, each city endors
ing the invitation of the others,
with each of course to have a fair
population.
Active publicily work has result
ed in such an influx of people in the
more active communities of the Pa
cific Northwest that housing the
newcomers has really become a ser
ious problem in some of the towns.
New~residences are being erected as
rapidly as possible, and rented long
in advance’ of their completion. In
some cf the'fruit districts, cars load
ed with household goods are occu
pying the tracks and the delay in
their unloading is making the or-
chardists apprehendsive as to track
age for their fruit shipments.
The roses for which the North
Pacific Coast is so famous are bloom
ing with almost the freedom and
perfection of early summer, and the
approach of Autumn has added to
their coloring. The Portland Com
mercial Club has resumed the dec
oration of its tables with flowers
furnished by different members, the
display being the subject of much
comment by Eastern visitors in par
ticular.
Rev. Herbert Frank Moulton, of
Biddeford, Maine, one of the best
known lecturers in the country, is
featuring his lecture on the Pacific
Northwest, and the Oregon Devel
opment League, in connection with
the commercial bodies'of Washing
ton, has furnished illustrating slides
of extraordinary attractiveness.
Through a telegram received
from Indianapolis, where the N a
tional Association of Funeral Direct
ors have just closed their session,
comes the news that this association
has chosen Portland for its 1909
convention, the Alaska-Youkon-Pa
cific Exposition being one of the
'actors in making this decision.
In this issue will be found a vin
dication of Atty. Geo C. Brownell.
This paper ut4all times will be glad
to give the truexonditions as it finds
them.
