The nerve centers require nutrition.
I f th e digestion is im paired the nerve

debility is the result.
Peruna is not a nervine nor a stimu

P eruna frees the stom ach of c atarrh a l
congestions and norm al digestion is the
result.
In o th er words, P eruna goes to the

San Francisco, Ju n e 18.—T h e annual

with an unexpected victory for the
m unicipality. T he m em bers of the
board of supervisors, w ho rep resen t
the city in the neg o tiatio n s w ith the
c o rporations, are for the m ost p art
business m en and law yers. It was
th o u g h t th a t th e ir sym pathies would
run n atu rally to the v e jte d in te rests
and th at the local service com panies,
which suffered heavily in the e a rth
quake and tire, would take advantage
of the situ atio n a n d m ake up from the
public w hat they lost in the tire. T h at
is exactly w hat the c o rp o ra tio n s tried
to do. T h ey said so openly, and a r
gued th eir rig h t to do so. but a m a
jo rity of the board stood firm for the
taxpayers, and the city w itnessed a
m ost en co u rag in g exam ple of com
petent governm ent.
P re ssu re from every possible ave
nue was b ro u g h t to bear on the su p e r
visors to force them to yield to th e de
m ands of all the service Com panies for
higher rates. T h e gas com pany want
ed an increased rate, the w ater com

should receive a 15 per cent advance
in rates, the telephone com pany re
sisted to the u tm ost, and the stre e t
railroad com pany ran cars w ithout
perm its, seized franchises and a t
tem pted to b o ttle up the traffic p riv
ileges on M arket street, when the su
pervisors stepped in and com pletely
blocked the gam e.
T he gas com pany asked for an in
crease from 85-cent to $1 gas T he
board conducted an inquiry, T h e gas
com pany prom ised to tu rn s its books

tion. T his, it a fte rw a rd appeared,
was a b'uff, for w hen the supervisors
asked for the records, the com pany
refused to produce them until prac
tically com pelled to do so. It was
then discovered th a t im proper charges
had been m ade in figuring the cost of
operation. T h e m ask was pulled aside
by the "b u sin e ss” b oard and the gas
com pany got an 85-cent rate.

GROWING H O G S IN IDAHO.
Station.
T h e hog in d u stry in Idaho is r e
ceiving m ore a tte n tio n now th an ever
before in the histo ry of the state.
T h e tendency to diversify farm op
e ratio n s is stro n g e r now th an in the
past. All alfalfa, o r all sheep or all
of any o th er one thing, unless it
should be fruit, is out of date for the
m ajority of farm ers of Idaho, b oth in
the n o rth ern p a rt of the state, w here
irrig atio n is not practiced, and in the
irrig ated sections of so u th ern Idaho.
T h e m ost succesful farm er, here as
elsew here, is the one w ho is m aking
livestock on the farm one of the im
p o rta n t factors. A y the dairy indus
try increases in in te rest the raising
of hogs will receive m ore attention.
A farm er who is not adverse to m ilk
ing cows will, as a rule, be a success
in handling pigs, because no one call
succeed in eith er line, to the fullest
extent, unless he looks carefully a fte r
details.
In Idaho the dairy industry is g ro w
ing, therefore I expect a m ore rapid
developm ent of the hog industry: In
fact, (here is a stro n g indication that
this is the case ju st now in several
sections of the state. In holding far
m ers' in stitu tes in sou th ern Idaho
m uch in te rest was noticed in the su b
jec t of feeding and breeding hogs.
Several shipm ents of pure bred stock
have recently been m ade into so u th
ern Idaho. P ure bred Poland China.
D uroc Jersey, C h ester W hite and
B erkshire pigs are found in in cre as
ing num bers in every farm ing section
of the state. P oland C hinas p redom i
nate, no d oubt; but the D uroc is b e
com ing a close c o m p e tito r in m any
sections.
A lfalfa pasture, w ith a sm all ra tio n
of shorts, ground w h eat o r finely
ground barley, will grow pigs very
rapidly. T his, supplem ented w ith sep-
c rato r milk, will produce a gro w th
equal to that secured in the c orn belt,
and in quality we flatter ourselves
th a t it is superior.
In grow th, our pigs can be m ade to
com pare quite favorably with those
fed on corn. N um erous re p o rts w ere
m ade last w inter at fa rm e rs’ m eetings
th at it was not difficult to produce a
pig th a t w ould w eigh tw o hundred
pounds at eight m o n th s old.
Som e sugar b eets and o th er ro o ts
can be fed, and are being used in
feeding hogs in Idaho. P o ta to e s boiled
and m ixed with one and a half to tw o
pounds of grain per hundredw eight of
pig, will produce good gains in live
w eight. A lfalfa, cut up w ith feed c u t
ter, and softened by steam ing or even
a sprinkling of cold w ater, w ith a l it
tle grain, m akes a good ration for
bro o d sow s du rin g w inter. A g reat
m any hogs are w intered largely on
dry alfalfa hay, and th ey do very
well.
In a state w here so m uch cheap fo r
age can be grow n for hogs, th ere is
g re at encouragem ent for t^e industry.
I-arge yields of w heat and barley can
be secured on irrig a ted lands, ami
often the w heat is of low m i'.'irg
quality, m aking it m uch m ore p rofit
able to feed it th an to sell it in the
sack. A bushel of w heat will m ake
from 12 to 15 pounds of gain in live
w eight w hen fed to th rifty young
hogs w eighing from 75 to 175 pounds.
In young pigs even g re a te r gains can
be secured.
Field peas are g row n in som e sec
tions for hog p astu re, and serve an
im p o rta n t purpose in providing good
p a stu rag e during the sum m er before
the stubble fields are ready to glean.
T h e re is a period in sum m er when
th ere is a lack of good pasture in the
grain -g ro w in g sections of the state.
L ittle alfalfa o r clover is grow n on
m any of the farm s, and often pigs
m ake v ery sm all gains during this
period. Som e farm ers sow grain,
such as w heat or barley, for hog p a s
ture, but even this does not produce
as good re su lts as w ould a pastu re of
alfalfa, pea* or clover.
B luegrass and w hite clover will
m ake a good pa stu re in som e locali
ties w here th ere is plenty of m o ist
ure and good soil. T h is does no t. in
our opinion, give as good resu lts
how ever, as the crops m entioned
above. Id a h o farm ers are m uch e n
couraged in raising hogs from the
fact th a t large packing plants are be
ing established on th e coast, th u s in
suring a steady dem and for live hogs,
and' while the price m ay not be any
m ore satisfacto ry th an in the past,
w ith a lim ited supply, th ere will be a
perm anency to th e dem and even
though the num ber of hogs produced
increases several tim es.
