No interest has
ever been paid, and it now amounts
to nearly $i,ooo.
There are two
reasons why the city has not met
this obligation. First, there have
been no funds to pay with, and sec
ond, the present mayor and city
council consider the bond issue ille
gal and are disposed to bring it to a
test at law. It is claimed that the
debt incured by the issuance of these
bonds is in excess of the amount
which the charter says the city may
contract.

The election passed off quietly
and undoubtedly the majority was
satisfied. Local option took quite
a wave as it ought to.

Children’ s Day will be celebrated
at the church Sunday the 14th. A
good program will be given and
every body is invited.
C. H. Foster, living near here,
was apprehended Monday morning
while he was in the attempt of kid
napping a couple of his wife’ s boys,
it is said, with the intention, it is
also claimed, of shanghaiing them
on a sailing vessel in Portland. A
petition signed by many of the bus
iness men and addressed to Port
land's juvenile court asking that the
children be taken care of secured
proper action in the case.
Mrs. Thecdoie Hoffman,who has
been at the Heylmau home all the
Spring, has returued to Eau Claire,
Wis. On Friday evening Mrs. W.
A. Heylman gave a party in honor
of her guest, at which the following
were present:
M ie Stevens, Mrs.

O’Connel and wife, Miss Esther
O’ Connel of Wiulock; Mrs. Hubble
of Idaho; O. W. Olson and wife, of

Was It an Attempted Hold-
Up?
The ordinary tranquillity which
pervades rural and suburban life in
this part of thecounty was disturbed
last Friday afternoon by the report
that a highwayman had attempted
to hold up the 4 o’clock train that
was returning to Portland. There
were three cars in the train, and as
it was nearing Morrow station, one
mile out from Estacada, a man rose
up out of the grass beside the train
and fired with a revolver at the last
car as it was passing him.
The
bullet passed through the car smash
ing a window pane on each side.
The conductorthinking he had been
shot at, did not stop the train. Who
it was and what the person’ s inten
tions were are mysteries.
It was
thought, however, to be someone
who had a grievance against the
railroad.

A Grand and Glorious
Celebration
Gov. Chamberlain to Orate
Editor New:
Estacada is to have a
grand celebration. Members of the
Vol. Fire Co. have all the plans
made for the big time. The R. R.
Co. have kindly given them the use
of Ihe park and pavilion, and have
also offered to furnish a band, but
it is thought best to give our own
band the first chance to furuish the
music. John Page is a committee
of one on finance who will call on
the people for contributions, and
everyone is asked to help to make
the celebration a success. All the
proceeds above the expenses are to
lie used in buying hose, and pro
viding fire protection for the resi
dence part of town on the hill, and
not for the fire company.
Every
good citizen is invited to cooperate.
Put your shoulder to the wheel and
push for one of the glorious old
times. Dancing in the pavilion and
music and picnicing in the park.
Gov. Geo. E. Chamberlain has been
invited to make the oration of the
day. John F. Lovelace has charge
of the concessions, ar.d nothing will
lie permitted to operate outside of
the park which will, in any way,
interfer or compete with the busi
ness houses of the town. The fire
company expect to have a refresh
ment stand in the pavilion. Those
who want concessions should see
Mr. Lovelace at once.
