Storm In Texas and Oklahoma
Creates A m I u I Havoc.
POPULATION IS DUMBFOUNDED
Loss
o f Life
Believed to Be High
Thousands o f Head o f Live
stock Killed.
Dallas. Tex.. May 26.— Seven thou
sand persons are practically without
shelter now as a result of the violent
storm which broke over Northern
Texas and Oklahoma Sunday night
Today alone fully 2.000 people were
driven from their homes by the ris
ing o f the Trinity river.
Houses,
barns and everything in the path of
the terrible flood is swept down and
carried away. Trinity river is a rag
ing, surging torrent atid nothing ap
parently stands before it.
Big fac
tories far removed from the river
proper are flooded, bridges have been
swept away like kindling wood. L ive
stock by the thousands have perished
and fear is now entertained that a
meat famine will follow in the wake
of the storm’s fury.
So far no arrangements o f a char
acter calculated to relieve the intense
buffering of thfe inhabitants have been
attempted.
It is really too soon to
give any real estimate of the dead.
With the abatement of the rising
waters steps will he taken at once to
help those in dire distress. As usual
in such cases, the poor of the various
cities and towns in the path of the
elements are suffering the worst.
The present storm is by far the
most violent o f the present year, and
for that matter perhaps the worst
storm that has visited Northern Texas
in several years. It was exceptionally
severe at Fort Worth. Dallas. Wichita
Falls, Dentop and Abilene.
The property loss will run extreme
ly high, but so far not even a con
servative estimate can be placed on
the whole. At Fort W orth alone it
is figured out that the storm will
cause close onto $100.000 damage.
W hen suburban points are finally
heard from the loss will run much
higher in that vicinity.
Reports from Mineral W ells state
that Wade Owens and F.rnest Stateler
were drowned there. Persons are also
reported drowned near W ichita Falls
and Childress.
At Denton an un
known man lost his life in attempting
to save some household effects.
All over the storm-swept district
railroads and crops have suffered
heavily.
Railroad traffic is practi-
callv at a standstill, as at most points
bridges have been torn from their
foundations by the surging flood wa
ter. As quickly as possible the rail
road people will repair the damage
done. In any event, it will be many
days before anything like schedule
time can be maintained on any of the
roads.
CURES
SKIN DISEASES
There is an evaporation from the body g o in g on continually, day and
night, through the pores and glands of the skin.
This is nature’s way of
m aintaining the proper temperature o f our systems and preserving the soft
ness and fle x ib ility of the skin, and so lon g as the blood is free from impur
ities no trouble w ill result. W hen, however, the blood from any cause
becomes infected with humors and acids, these too must be expelled, and
com ing in contact with the delicate fibres and tissues with which the skin is
so abundantly supplied they produce irritation and inflammation, and the
effect is shown by Eczema, Acne, Tetter, and skin affections of v a r io js kinds.
These im purities and humors g et into the blood through a deranged or
inactive condition of the system ; the members whose duty it is to carry off
the waste and refuse m atter of the body fail to properly perform their work,
and this impure, ferm enting matter is left in the system to be absorbed by
the blood. The skin is not o n ly affected by poisons generated within the
system, but poisons from without,
such as Poison Oak, Poison Ivy,

A N A R C H Y IN PERSIA.
State Apparently Helpless to
With Situation.
Cope
Berlin. M ay 26.— Advices received
here are to the effect that anarchy
prevails throughout Persia. As an ex
ample of the Shah’ s helplessness to
cope with the situation a libel action
is cited which has been brought
against the Persian newspaper Mus-
sowad, as an article stating that parts
of Persian territory are in the control
of brigands and revolutionists, and
concluding with the following:
‘‘The governors are tyrannical, the
administration is corrupt and ineffi
cient. the taxes are in arrears, the ex
chequer is empty, the soldiers’ wage-,
are unpaid and the army is helpless
What is the Shah going to do in these
melancholy circumstances?
He de
votes himself to orgies night after
night until daybreak.”
The newspaper proceeds to give
proof of its allegations and concludes
bv demanding the dethronement of
the Shah and the establishment of a
republic.
The Shah brought a libel action,
but withdrew it when the editor o f
fered to prove the charges in detail
Follow ing this, the walls of Teheran

Saves Rat, Is Arrested.
Pittsburg. May 26.— For trying to
save a half-drowned rat from being
tortured to death, Thomas Morris
was arrested yesterday after he had
been badly beaten by Joseph H.
Smith
Morris saw a crowd of men
around the rat. and Smith was poking
it with a stick. Morris struck Smith
and a fight followed, in which Morris
received several cuts on his head. Po
liceman Renwick Ewart arrested both
men. Magistrate Brady commended
Morris and sentenced Smith to pay a
fine of $15, or serve 20 days in the
work house.

That American farmers and promoters

Dean James E. Russell, of Columbia
University, New York. Dean Russell
was recently a visitor at the state col
lege, and during his stay there ad-
1 reseed an assembly of the teachers of
the Inland Empire, who were attending
the teacher*’ institute in Pullman. Rela
tive to the problems just mentioned, hs
•aid:
“ Thirty years ago New York was
«ending butter and cheese to the Lon
don markets. New York butter and
cheese were ruling out similar products
from Ontario, and other parts of the
world. Just thirty years ago Denmark
began to think she could make butter
and put it in the London market. The
question was, How could she overcome
the lead that New York already had in
the London markets! She sent men to
London to study out the ground; to find
what London wanted. Then she set
about to give them the required product.
‘ Denmark is a country of poor soil,
which has been tilled and overworked
for a thousand years. Nevertheless, the
Danish population annually sells in the
markets of London $35,000,000 worth
of butter. In 1903 the entire United
States exported only $1,064,000 worth
if butter. In addition to the vast quan
tity of butter mentioned, Denmark
sends out one fifth as much pork as we
do, and just as many horses; and cer
tainly, we should lead the world in the
breeding of horses. In the meantime
the Danish nation hag taught the hens
how to work. Four hundred and fifty
thousand dollars worth of eggs were ex
ported by this country in 1875, and in
1903 this export had reached a value
of $8,092,000. In the last ten years
Denmark hns taken $8.000,000 worth of
corn from Iowa and Nebraska, via New
York, which she has fed to Danish cows
and pigs, and then placed the latter in
the European markets in successful
competition with similar products from
America.
‘ I said a moment ago that twenty
years ago the competitor of Denmark
was the Stats of New Y'ork. In these
twenty years the Danish people have
increased their exports from $1,000,000
to $40,000,000. In the same twenty
years farm values in the State of New
York have decreased $200,000,000. In
the last fifteen years Ontario has outbid
New York in the same way in the
cheese market. Twenty years ago New
York companies received Canadian
cheese and put the New York stamp on
it to get one cent more in the English
market. Today the New York farmers
are sending their cheese over the Cana
dian boundaries, and paying two cents
per pound in order to sell it at a ll."
Showing the superiority of European
methods of education in comparison
with American education, Dean Russell
said:
“ Wurtemburg is a small German
state, a little larger than the Inland
Empire of Eastern Washington, and
having a population of about two mil
lion persons. Thirty years ago Wur
temburg began to realize that her pop
ulation was beginning to dwindle; that
something had to be done to maintain
her integrity as a state. 8o she set
about building up a system of schools
for all the people; that would help the
boy who wished to be a carpenter, a
plumber, or a farmer, in the same de
gree, according to his needs, as they
would assist the youth who desired to
be a lawyer, an engineer, or a phy
sician. Today Wurtemburg has a uni
versity giving courses of world wide
fame; technical schools, weaving and
manufacturing schools; two hundred and
thirty industrial schools in towns and
villages; schools for metal workers, and
workers in the textile trades; schools of
art, of agriculture, of preparation for
household management; and numerous
farm schools, and high schools through
out the state.
“ Wurtemburg. n
hut Uttle
larger than the Inland Empire of East
ern Washington, supports all these in
stitutions, with an income of ten dollar?
per head of population. What would
American citizens think, if in addition
to supporting agricultural colleges, they
were asked to support five hundred
technical and industrial schools for
every two million of population! This
is what is being done in the small state
of Wurtemburg, and from the point of
view of American citizens today, it is
almost inconceivable; the contemplation
of which must lead any American citi
zen to infer that his country has much
to do and learn before it can success
fully compete with the old country in
the products of industrial education.”

Haverford, Pa.— “ Is it considered
that hog raising is practicable in the
northwestern part of the United
States!”
H. W.
“ It is probable that there is no place
in the United States where the prices
for pork products average as high as
in the Pacific Northwest. A condition
of significance, too, is that the people
of this region are not sufficiently alive
to the necessity of their meeting the
demand for pork products. Those who
are in the business are making monsy.
Conditions ars improving, however, for
at the present time we note a growing
tendency among farmers to pay mors
attention to this business. The Perk-

making some headway. At the experi

PAREGORIC or laudanum to make it sleep. These drugs will produce
sleep, and A PEW DROPS TOO MANY will produce the SLEEP FROM WHICH
THERE IS NO WAKING. Many are the children who have been killed or
whose health has been ruined for life by paregoric, laudanum and morphine, each
of which is a narcotio product of opium. Druggists aro prohibited from selling
either of the narcotics named to children at all, or to anybody without labelling
them “ poison.” The definition of “ narcotic ” is: “A medicine which relieves pain
